Longreach. Winton. Diamantina River Rd. Windorah. Stonehenge. Quilpie.

Thanks - appreciate the help.

Try the camp area just south of Barcaldine, should be in Camp Australia. About 1.5 hours from Longreach, south that is, 48 hour limit, about 3 or 4 ks off the Matilda Hwy, sign might say Isisford. As a kid it was called the Weir on the Alice River, just remembered you cross the Alice from the south just before the tturn off on your right.
Hope this helps.Cheers Bruce
PS for other places, Camp Australia & Camping in Qld by National Parks.

Should have said the turn off is on the right after you cross the Alice River.

I think Iam losing it tonight "turn left after the Alice River" coming from the south that is if you are coming from the south. If you follow this route and go thru to Isisford there is another free camp spot along the river there as well.

Longreach Caravan park, the one nearest the Stockmans hall of fame is a great park. Often have a bush poet around the campfire in the evenings.

South of Stonehenge, about 15Ks from memory on the Quilpie side of Windorah the road crosses the Cooper creek. There's some lovely campsites along the banks of the creek, both sides, and there a flush toilet but no showers etc.

Have a great trip....

Spliney,

One of the best things about where you're travelling is that every town has pretty good caravan parks and there are lots of national parks where you have varying degrees of amenities. Longreach Gunnadoo CP is the one near the Hall of Fame..Barcaldine you can camp at the Showgrounds. We camped at Lochern NP near Stonehenge and Diamantina Np .. bush camping. Old Cork Station seems to be popular and Bladensburg Np near Winton sounds interesting. Ilfracombe, Isisford, Yaraka, Jundah, Stonehenge are all worth a visit as is Quilpie which is a lovely little town. There are several stations in the area where you can camp... When you get to the first town with tourist info try to get hold of a Matilda Highway Tourist Magazine. There will plenty of information there to point you in all sorts of right directions! If you were going south of Quilpie I would go out to Yowah. You can fossick for opals there near the caravan park. Eulo is good too... Really, you have no worries no matter where you go out there. It's all good.

Have a great trip.
