I am in the market for a BigHaul or Tirfor hand winch. Was in Aldi the other day and saw they had them but no info, no price available. Nothing on the web site. Anyone shed any light on these - I'm not that keen on supermarket 4wd stuff but don't mind a bargain when it comes along.

Nifty,

Ring up, or go into, one of the TJM stores. They sell the Big Haul which is a highly regarded hand winch. They generally have a price list on an A4 sheet of paper adjacent to the products. This will give you a base price.

Then you can go back to Aldi and ask what they are selling them for and you will have a comparison between the two outlets that will enable you to choose the best price.

Thanks Sandy. More concerned about the quality. Bighauls are in the $330 to $350 range, and I'm resigned to that, but if the Aldi things are of thre same quality and half the price I'd consider them.

Sorry Nifti, I misinterpreted your Post.
I thought you meant you saw the Big Haul and Tirfor in Aldi.

Although I'm not a promoter of 4WD Monthly, I remember a test report of several hand winches some time back, which gave the Big Haul the thumbs up.

Good value for money when compared to the Tirfor and from memory, it took less "strokes" of the handle per metre travel than all others tested.

As far as Aldi products are concerned, I have no experience with the company or their products, so I will refrain from comment on other alternatives.

Sandman,

Still got a copy of that test?

Know which issue it was in?

Looking at one too, and I remember reading it.
A lot of difference between the effort required on the handle, the line in per pump and other things they looked at.

If you know the issue, I most probably could get one throught the local library.

Send me an email adam_craze at hotmail.com. I have a terrain tamer, hand winch and one of the dudes i work with has the Aldi one, i think it was yellow. I might be able to get the specs on it. I cannot see alot of difference, but i will see if he has the manual tomorrow and get some info for you.

I have just got one of the Aldi hand winches and the specs are 2400 kg pull with 20 mtr of cable and it comes in a hard plastic carry case.

Haven't used it yet but for the price thought I would give it a try. After all a Tirfor is only a 1600 kg for the bigger one.
