As per the itinerary in post 35321, can anyone advise if there are any places where credit cards wont be excepted or where cash is a better option? Just trying to gauge how much cash I should take.

regards,
Sam.

Amex is not popular in some places because of high fees, mastercard seems ok,personally i would carry around $500-$1000 cash as well

meant to add have had cards stop working due to card damage or grit on the magnetic strip .cash is handy as it takes days to replace a card.

As I posted on here some time ago; I have had an EFTPOS transaction refused and the store instructed to retain the card (which they didn't) when there was plenty of cash in the account. When questioned on the phone ANZ said the account was fine and they had no idea why it had happened. They have failed to reply to my letter on the matter.

I make sure I have a wad of cash tucked away in a safe spot these days just in case ANZ decide they won't let me have my money again. I wouldn't trust the bastards any further than I could throw them.

Good question Kev. A combination of laziness (I have business accounts to move too) and, as you say, they are all the same. I may well move my personal banking to a credit union soon though.

Surprising isn't it, that in this day and age, bank robbery is legal? :)

Visa and Mastercard both good everywhere.
Also most places, (even those out of the way) seem to have EFTPOS.

I don't carry a significant amount of cash anywhere.

I do when I go bush - at least $500. The bloody banks can't put a stop on cash as they choose to do from time-to-time with plastic cards even if you do have money in the account.

Hi There,

At Mt Dare we have EFTPOS, VISA, Mastercard but no Amex and Diners. Our data links are through satellite and other remote places would be similar to us. The problem arises when these links are down for whatever reason then you need cash. Filling with fuel then makes you cash poor.
We would be happy to give a cashout through EFTPOS as would other places.

Hope this assists.

Regards

Some places with high data line rents charge a shekel or two to use credit cards. As previously mentioned cards fail at times. I always make sure I have two or three fuel fills in cash before I move on.

Remember even new vehicles break down. If you are more than the maximum distance your NRMA/RACQ etc cover allows free towing you may have to guarantee the local tow agent you have the cash to cover the extra distance in your pocket before he comes out to recover you.

If you're gone for a month, I'd consider around $1k and use your Visa card at every opportunity. Keep the cash for emergencies and the occasional small purchase.
