Hi Guys,
I have a 1989 mitubishi Pajero NG V6 with problems.there are metal shavings(dust) in the engine bay, the vehicle makes an awful sound, all of the engine belts are loose, basically it is undrivable. The mechanic has told me that it is the harmonic balancer. I have no idea.
Can anyone give me an indication as to what parts will need to be replaced?, What these parts may cost?, and where in sydney I might find these parts for a reasonable price?.
Thanks Guys

The harmonic balancer is the main pulley coming from the motor. Its not unusual on some cars to have this problem(the V6 commodores especially had problems). Sorry can't help you with pricing info, but i would be changing all the belts so price up a harmonic balancer and new belts.

Hi Deisel that is a common problen with a 6G72, check that it has'nt worn the end of the crankshaft, you will probly need a new keyway(sits between the crank & the harmonic balancer). make sure you get a new bolt to hold the balancer on, Mitsubishi recommend a new bolt even if the old one is undone for any reason. Good idea to change the front oil seal while the harmonic balancer is off.

has it recently had a timing belt or water pump done where the harmonic balancer had to be removed.
we have a 300zx in work at the moment where he had the timing belt done somewhere and they didnt tighten the main crank bolt up to 459358691875nm and it came loose and screwd the crank shaft.
aproximate cost $5000.
if the keyway flogs out could be expensive pretty sure pajero have a solid harmonic balancer unlike the commodore that are rubber mounted.
cheers

Go over to the Pajero club forum (www.pajeroclub.com.au/forum/PajeroForum.htm) and do a search. This is a common problem with 3LT pajeros and the balancer can be a bitch to get off. Often damages the keyway on the front of the crankshaft.
If your lucky you'll just need a new harmonic balancer and a woodruff key.
