We are Kiwis planning to do the 'Big Lap' in a few years. We thought it wise to do a short test run in a Camper Van to get a feel for it. So we are flying to Melborne in September to do a two week trip through Victoria up to
Bega (to visit family)and back to Melborne.
Question: Can anyone suggest a suitable route to take ?

I think the Princess Highway perhaps via
Lakes Entrance would be nice. The drive through the mountains is nice too with some nice spots along the way. You can use www.whereis.com.au to map out the drive if you wish. I did the
Bega drive not long ago en-route to Bermagui.

Jackpot
You have a few options:
A. Follow the Princes highway east out of
Melbourne – this is the most direct route.
B. Vary this route by following the coast round from
Melbourne to Sale and then continue NE on the Princes HWY.
C. You can return to
Melbourne by going up the
Snowy Mountains Highway via Albury. Probably more your type of mountainous roads!!
There are a few travel planners you can try to get driving instructions:

straight run is straight up princes hwy (route 1) which will take about 8 hrs driving .
can do quicker or slower depending on stops.
could also go melb up hume highway(think 31) then great alpine rd through
bright and eventually comes out at
bruthen and onto princes hwy near bairnsdale and then continue on up to
bega..very windy and hilly but fantastic
views(if conditions good).
good test for vehichle and van.
depends how long u want to take to get there and if u want windy rds etc
wish u a great trip
cheers

Allow a minimum of three days for the route around the coast on princess highway (route 1) It is a beautiful drive and constantly changes - coastal
views, mountains, deep forests etc - There is plenty of all accomodation en route if you need it.
Have a good holiday
