Hi, can anyone suggest a good (cheap) inverter to run my old engle fridge? It is an old 24volt only type and I need a inverter to boost the volts from 12v to 24 volts in my landcruiser. I have looked a redakc in SA and they wont $230 for a 7.5 amp 12 to 24volt inverter. Do I need 7.5volts??? or can it run any lower amps?? Thanks Deano.

Deano,
I assume you mean, "do you need 7.5 amps"?
The amperage rating is only the maximum that the inverter is design to output.
Amperage is governed purely by the device plugged into it and yes it will run at lower amps.
If a device is plugged in and attempts to draw more than what the inverter can deliver, (7.5 amps maximum) the inverter will trip out, so that it is not overloaded.
So, providing your fridge doesn't "draw" more than 7.5 amps, the Redarc Inverter should suit your purposes admirably. The current rating (i.e. that which the fridge will draw at full load) should be marked on a compliance plate somewhere on the fridge.
Now, is it really an Inverter you need?
An Inverter converts DC voltage 12vdc or 24vdc input, to 240 volts AC output.
When you say your Fridge is an old 24 volt type, what do you mean.
Will it only run on 24 volt (DC) input. Or does it require 240 volt (AC) input.
Or will it run on either 24 volt DC, or 240 volt AC input.
It is important that you understand what the Fridge requires as input voltage (AC or DC) before you can choose an appropriate solution to run it from your vehicle supply.

Hi deano,
See, DC to DC Convertors
Or Google for "12v dc to 24v dc"

Forgot to add, if the fridge draws 7.5 Amps at 24Volts DC it will draw a minimum of 15Amps on the 12Volts DC side so your going to need to take into account how fast your battery is being discharged.

If you can't find a cheaper solution you could buy two of these laptop Power supplies - each puts out 24volts at 5 amps. The cost for TWO will be $140.

Hi guys, talked to the 12volt
shop in WA and they said that if the fridge draws 4.5 on start up on 12v, it will draw only 2.5 volts on 24v. at this stage I have a cheapest price of 150 dollars for a 7.5 amp unit. I will keep trying tommorrow. Thanks guys I will let you know. Deano
