Sick of hearing about people's trip reports, sick of reading those smug posts about people who are about to head off on their trips. Well, our time has come and are just about ready to head off on Monday for six months, mainly in WA. Our two kids finish school for the year this Friday and they are certainly excited about that.

I have lost count of the number of useful things I have picked up on this forum, either through asking questions or just by reading threads of interest. The advice and offers of help with problems have been great and, although I cast the net far and wide, the collective advice in this forum and the excellent material provided elsewhere on the site, is invaluable.

The only frustration with an electronic forum is not being able to meet some of the characters face to face, so I hope we will be able to meet a few on the way around. Although you don't know it, I owe a few of you some beers for your help.

Thanks again to all and remember that the wisdom and humour you share on here helps many more people than the one that asked the question.

Cheers,

Matt.

Why did you need help to go on a trip to WA Matt? Surely it's not that hard! Have a good time!

Are you for real!!!

Any time out of ACT & Canberra is an adventure. It is when they see what the real world is like.

Cheers.

Come on Feral, Canberra is a great place. All the facilites you want, paid for by the taxpayer and only 15 minutes from Australia. Fair point Andrew, one of the best pieces of advice I ever got on this forum was something like, 'you need to get out more'. Spot on I thought.

Yes, have a great trip Matt. Travelling with your family is a wonderful thing to do. My kids are grown up but they still remember the trips that we did and talk about them with happy memories.

We're heading to the west too and will be in Broome and on the Gibb River Road during August. Still have to put in three more frosty weeks here in Victoria before we can head off.

Enjoy yourselves...happy travelling and best wishes

Thanks Viv. Planning on the Gibb River Road (east to west) sometime in September, so will probably miss you.

And your post makes it all that much better for those of us still stuck in the mundane required to pay for the next adventure.
Not that you were bragging though I'm sure hey?

Safe and enjoyable travels.

Oh, you wanna believe I was bragging. Too good an opportunity not to eh? But the comments on the help this forum provides were genuine though.

Good on you Matt.

Sounds like the family is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

And about the face to face bit.
There is always the National Gathering being planned for next year.
Come to think about it and having met some of the characters face to face....hmmm!.......enough said:-)

Seriously though, one of the enjoyable things I have obtained from this "community", is the meeting of a few forumites, face to face.
It may be only a minute portion of all those lurkers that inhabit the forum, but spending an occasional weekend with some, or even "bumping" into a few at 4WD shows etc., doesn't appear to have had any "adverse" effect on me........Yet!

Enjoy your long trip mate and spare the occasional thought for those of us, less fortunate.
Bill

Have a good trip.

"Just head west young man".
Until your feet get wet :-)

You coming home the Flinders and Bass way?
(They circumnavigated Oz anti-clockwise.)
Or coming back through the centre?
Or haven't you thought about that yet? A real adventure.

Great education for the kids.

Probably keep south on the way home. Having lived in Darwin for a number of years, we hav done some exploring in the centre so not this time unfortunately. 6 months sounds like a lng time, but when you start adding up all the places you want to go, it gets short in a hurry. No really firm plans though, we will play a lot by ear, and that is EXACTLY what I am looking forward to about the trip.

Cheers,

Matt.

Well done Matt, hope all goes well with your trip. How did you get your better half to agree to go for 6 months, might have to get her to talk to mine.
Safe travelling

She is dead keen and the driving force behind most of it. Marry a farm girl who hates being cooped up on a suburban block.

Thanks Marion, we certainly hope it is something that will stay with the kids for life. Maybe they will cart us around in our old age ;-)

Surprising the number of people who give you the 'furrowed eyebrows' when you mention taking the kids out of school for 6 months. At age 10 and 6, I can't imagine that they will be any poorer for the experience.

Our kids still talk about the trips we did when they were around 10 and 6. Yours will get the memories of a lifetime.

Have a good one Matt.

Hope to see you on the way home.
