Hi all,

I am currently in Alice Springs having spent two weeks in Adelaide before heading up the Stuart Highway. We have been to Henbury Meteorite Craters, and enjoyed a nights solitary camping before heading across to Chambers Pillar via the Hugh River Stock Route. This road was very good, but the road from Maryvale to Chambers was a disgrace. Huge corrugations and a few washouts turned the 45 km drive into a one and a half hour journey in. It was worth it though as once the campground filled up, there was a great group of people to socialise with. The next day was spent driving the short distance to Deeep Well Station where we camped one night as we know the owners.

Next day we headed into Alice via the South Road, that was also severly corrugated due to the Finke Desert race having been run a couple of weeks prior. The last 30kms into Alice were good as roadworks were under way to repair the South Road. Two days in Alice for some r & r and fuel and food top ups, and tomorrow we are off along the Tanami on our way to Western Australia and the Kimberley.

The trip has been very relaxing so far, and my eight year old is having a ball. Being just the two of us life is too easy! Fuel economy has been very good for my old girl, and I have averaged approx 18.7 for the trip so far. Having the 80 series carrying a lot of weight, as well as towing the Tambo camper, I am hoping these types of figures continue over the next ten weeks.

Cheers for now, and I will add updates along the way.

Glenn

I don't know you but I am really jealous..

I love that part of the world and did the Alice tip with my wife and two boys back in 2001.

You have caused me to dream about another trip.

All the best, hope all goes well.

You need to send some images !!!

Glenn,
Have just come across the Tanami three weeks ago from Halls Ck to the Alice. From Alice to The Granites was quite good. From the Granites to Rabbit Flat had some badly corrugated sections. From Rabbit Flat to Tanami mine was good. From there to the WA border was woeful. We were often down to a crawl in 1st gear but nothing fell off the Patrol or the CT. There is a lengthy deviation (about 10 km) about 15 km short of the border. It is only one lane wide with very few chances to move over to allow passing so monitor your UHF as it would not be good to meet a roadtrain on that section. From the border to the GNH is good.
Diesel was $ 2.10 / L at Rabbit Flat. We camped there for the night but nearly froze. Watch out for roadworks & roadtrains near and past the Wolfe Ck crater t/off. How did you go with your trailer over the ridge 10 km short of Chambers P? We stayed at Oak Valley. It was great. Be happy to answer any questions about the Kimberley.
Regards,
Jon W
