Morning all,
We're heading up to the
Gold Coast on Wednesday, and just wanted a little info. We have done the drive a few times before, so no hassals with the distance in one day, or anything like that.
We will be leaving
Sydney at about 3am, so I am looking for somewhere nice for breakkie and lunch, preferably not at a large american fast food chain (why do the kids like that crap so much???). So I would guess breakfast stop would be at about 7am somewhere like Port Macquarie, or mabey a bit before that (it is a NA diesel landcruiser....lol), and lunch would be mabey
Ballina way?
Does anyone have any suggestions of some lesser known locations? We would prefer to support some local businesses, and it would be good to have some decent food, although I am sure the kids will disagree!
Cheers,
Chump

The best eating
places going north are:
1 Coolongolook at the
Caltex
2 Moorelands
Caltex
3 Frederickton Pie
Shop Nth of Kempsey
4 Clybucca BP
5 BP Nth of
Grafton
6 Big Prawn
Ballina
Have a good trip Dave. P.S. These are good eating Truck stops.

I will second the suggestion of the
Caltex at Coolongolook. Great service, great food, great prices.
Another few
places to consider is to divert into Port Macquarie (10K in and 10K out) and pick a place on the
water around the Town Green, or try Lou's Cafe in Belgrave St Kempsey. Turn left off the bridge over the Macleay River and Lous is on right hand side.
Further north, try the cafes at
Woodburn (just south of
Ballina) for lunch, after that it is really only
Ballina or Byron (overrated and over priced) before hitting the dual road that takes you into Qld.

Hi Chump,
On the highway between the two Port Macquarie turnoffs is the Cassegrain Winery, opposite the Caterpillar spares place. They used to have all sorts of foods on offer.
Ballina has quite a few cafe's etc in the main street. Haven't been to any of them in a long time so can't comment on individual
places.
As to that fast food chain, when my daughters want to go there I give them my stock answer and keep driving. "No, you've been good girls today, you don't need punishing"
Geoff.

Thanks for the info..
lol - ours are only 4 and 6 - they take their happy meals very seriously....
They are the reason we are leaving so early - they'll hopefully sleep until Port Macquarie, making for a much more pleasant drive.
Cheers,
Chump

There is a lovely cafe attached to the Pub at Lennox Head, just past
Ballina. It is a great little town to call in to right on a beautiful stretch of beach. And only 5 mins off from the Highway

If the time of day was different, I would suggest the BP at Kew (35km sth of Port Macq) as they have fantastic home made pies and sausage rolls but I don't know how good they would be for breaky lol.
Cruiser suggested Lou's in Kempsey. I would second this idea, very good food.
Safe driving,
Trevor.
