Hi,

I'm looking for a roof rack and possibly also a luggage basket for a Subaru. Does anyone know of a cheap place to buy this in Sydney? I've checked out a couple of places and they all seem to be about the same price. Can you twist their arm a bit for a better deal?

Han.

Hi Han,
From bitter experience with roof racks in the past I would be cautious about buying 'cheap'. What you really want is quality at a lesser price. Cheapies can cause you more pain and strain than you need.
We worry about companies price fixing for the major items but don't stop to realise that items such as roof bars are priced by the supplying company.
I tried five different dealers for Rhino bars for my LC 100 and the difference in price between the whole lot was $8.00.
Sorry can't help you with the Subaru but I do have a set of three Rhino commercials to suit a Pajero NM if anyone is interested.

When I shopped around I found that there was some deffinate illegal price fixing going on with the major brands, you will probally just have to pay the price unless you know someone in the trade...

Hi Han,

I tried this mob, rak roof-roofs and am extremely happy with their product at a competitive price.

I reckon their quality is equal, if not better, than Rola and especially happy with their backup service. I also bought some of their fittings for my kyak and was given good advice over the phone.

Cheers

Captain

What is a good basket for a RAK? I take it that some might not fit.

Would you have bought the heavier ARB rack if RAKs had been available at the time? - Just wondering what I might do.

Hi EV700,

I don't have a basket for my RAK, so cannot advise on what suits. But I found the service and advice from RAK excellent so maybe a call to them will help.

I also have the ARB roofrack for when I need to carry more gear. I use the RAK for my Kayak and fishing rods but change to the ARB rack for heavy items - horses for courses!

Cheers

yes i put my hand up for them too. i have a large basket that easily fits the bars. It is a heavy duty basket but don't know the brand, got it off ebay. the set up works very well as the RAK bars are keyed release so all very easy to put on or take off. I use the bars only for my kayaks and rods.

the guys are very good to deal with and their products are excellent. If you live in sydney i recommend a visit to them.

(i have no affiliation with them:)

Thanks for the recommendation! I had visited their web site a while ago but was not yet ready to make the plunge. Anyway, I popped over to Mona Vale today to pick up a RAK roof rack.

Regards,

Han.

Sorry this won't help much but if anyone is looking for the same answer in Melbourne try "Roof Carrier Systems".

They are in Burke Road near Toorak Rd.

They sell major brands and if you buy there when you change cars and inevitably need new bars they give you a 50% RRP trade in on your old ones.

I went from a Corolla to a Commodore at one stage and took my Atera bars in expecting about $125 changeover.

They asked if I cared if I got new or 2nd hand bits and I said no. They reset the gutter clamp angles, supplied secondhand clamps and longer bars and threw in a wind deflector and charged me a whopping $20.

Needless to say I was stoked. I buy most of my roof rack bits there (except the Courier which I made my self) and so far they've put bars, ski boxes and ski racks on Corollas, Commodores & now our Forester for me - and chains too.

Great service from a great small business.
