3.5m is plenty.
I'll let the colour consultants address the second question.

I saw a flag pole that high, but the owner didn't gain the advantage he thought he would as the flag pole, which was somewhat flexible, bent back over the vehicle as he drove at normal speed.

Steve, 15 feet is the common measurement used off the ground for sand flags in some of the dune buggy parks but 3.5 metres will be sufficient to warn others in the Simpson. Don't get too fussed what you hang off the pole though.......I've seen a pair of white undies used to great effect.
Cheers Craig........

Hi Steve ,
You can get a good flag on EBay for around $10 - fluoro red . I just went up the Canning SR . I saw very few flag masts on Bull bars over 7 feet in length . There was the odd exception of a couple around 10 feet ( like yours ) but most were shorter . I had a couple of chances to see if 7 foot was long enough because there was a lot of on coming traffic on the CSR and Calvert Track . I guess though , the longer it is , the more visible it is (and unlike the CSR , there is not to many tree branches in the Simpson to break it on )
Mine was made from a Shakespeare Ugly Stik fishing rod blank and is 7 feet ( 2.1 m ) long .
Cheers ,
Willie.

Hight is not all of it, if the pole is too flexable you will achevie nothing, stay with
Bright colours & Don't put to much as you have to go over a lot of dunes (french line 1100 old) this has tested a lot of arials & arial bases, on our trip across we came apon a toyota that had a tent pole as its flag pole that broke cracking the windscreen. Have agreat time

Personally, I like the white on black.
White scull & crossbones on a black background.
I believe it's commonly called the "Jolly Roger".

I use a surf rod from cash converters.
12 feet off the ground was our club recommendation.
Fluoro
orange stands out on a blue sky background, and it should flap around.
And mounted on the front is best for obvious reasons.

Hi Phil
Old Scalyback & denny did not mention a sand flag, I think
I was talking about a safety flag as used on
mine sites
If a flag meets the standard for people seeing you and not running over you it will meet the requirements of the
Simpson desert.
That is my troughs only and may be wrong

i just made
mine the other day - used an extendable fishing pole and cut off the last 2 bits cos they were too thin and flexi - it started off at 10'' so only a little shorter now.....
Made the flag out of nathans old bundy shirt - fairly
bright yellow - with the bundy
sign on it still!!!
ive been told to work on being able to see it from 500m away but yeah like someone said if its too high it'll bend backwards!!
Laura...
ps....we are using 100 mile an our tape to keep ours on and then just cut it off when we are finished - not needing to bolt more stuff on the bullbar!!!
have fun!!

Too short if you ask me. My simple logic is that if they are there to warn oncoming traffic then a taller job will do that better. There were plenty of dips deep enough to almost bury
mine. And I like orange/red.
See,
Kind regards
