Later this year I'm leadeing a trip down the Murray Riv to the Coorong and then doing the
Border Track. I am currently doing a paper recce of possible campsites along the way and at this stage I'm looking for first hand information on the following:
Merbein Common (aka
Horseshoe Bend) 10km NW of
Mildura on banks of Murray R near Merbein. According to Boiling Billy access is via Old
Wentworth Road. Hema 40A4
Wallpolla Island
State Forest 25km W of Merbein on banks of Murray R. Access via Old Mail Road HEMA 40 A3/A4
While I'm happy I'll be able to finde these sites I'm wondering what they are actually like and what size group could I get in to these comfortably. My group will be 3xCT and 3xTents. All advice welcome.
Thanks
Pete

Hi Patrol22,
I am an old Merbein boy and have camped at these
places many times.
Access to Merbein common is off the Old
Wentworth Road and is the track at the rear of the Merbein winery. Several of the spots along the river would cater for your group size and there is a small
toilet at the
swimming hole area which is about 1km in from the Old
Wentworth Road. However, this common area is not too far from civilisation and with it comes the potential problem of crime. In the past it has been a site for dumping of stolen cars and some unruly drinking sessions. I do not want to be alarmist but these are the facts.
On the other hand, Walpolla Island is a fair drive out of Merbein and a little less visited. Again several spots would cater for a group your size and there is access to plenty of firewood. Care would need to be taken if it has rained as the Old Mail Road can be very slippery in some spots.
A
good spot to
camp with space is at Snaggy (GPS Coordinates-S34.08.125 E141.52.475) or near (S34.06.487 E141.45.154) which is a good fishing location. Camping at the latter may be a bit more spread though and more isolated to get to. You will need to arrange your own toileting at all spots here.
Enjoy your trip.
Cheers.

Peter
Could you please email me off line - I would like to send you a map screen shot to ensure that I've located both those
places properly. Also would like it if you could give me a bit more info on access roads - ie is access from
Wentworth on the north bank or from Merbein along the south back etc. My email is:
peteandlyn22(at)bigpond(dot)com
Thanks in advance
