Hi all,

I've got a 99 Hilux 2.7 petrol (3rzfe) that has #4 injector running lean, I put some cleaner thru the fuel tank without success. I've got it booked in for a service but I'm a few hours from town.

I don't really want to run it any further as the spark plug is a really lean white with no tan at all.

Should I pull the injector off and try to clean it so I can get it to the service or is it a pretty non servicable part without shop tools?

I figured I'd remove it and give it a dose of carby cleaner.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Slammin

Unleaded will burn clean with a slight blackish tip.

Don't try clean the injectors it will be blocked from inside and you will be wasting your time. Swap the plugs around to make sure it is not a bad plug and check for vacuum leaks on the small hoses on the manifold.

If in doubt have it towed.

Regards Derek.

Thanks Derek for your reply, you confirmed my thoughts.

I'll swap the sparks around and monitor that.

Cheers, Slammin.

In a previous life I had an XR8, thoyght I'd get the injectors cleaned by a professional. Lucky I did, when they took them out they test them to check the flow pattern. I was surprised at how bad they were ( the car was 3 years old). So I had to replace them as you can't clean them if they are really bad.

If you can get them out then do so and fit new ones with new seals.

If it is still playing up it may have an electrical problem. Had a Telstar TX5 that started playing up. tried the injectors to find the sealed coil unit had gone south, $900 later I got a Falcon.

The car's done 140+K so I figure I'm in the same boat. The cars running just fine a slight, slight decrease in power @130km/h.

The only real heads up was idling was about 50-100 rpm off normal that developed recently. I was chasing that when I went thru the usual insp. checkup routines.

I'm guessing they'll probably correct the other 3 with cleaner but #4 is stuffed.

Oh well we're due a trip to town anyways.

Try running a few tanks of premium unleaded through the tank.
Its great stuff and you will be surprised at how well and clean it keeps the fuel system.
I have a workshop and use a mobile guy in Sydney. He has been doing ours for years and is great at what he does. Let me know what state you are in and if in NSW I could pass on his number if it helps. Even some cars that are running with no problems evident, is surprising to see how bad they are on the test machine.
Hope this helps

I do like PULP, I've run it for years in my motorbikes. You could pick straight away what sort of fuel was in the tank. MMMM puuuurple, bit more pickup and bit smoother. But at the moment I am limited to yellow, OPAL.

I'm in the NT so thanks anyway.
