Hello, two quick questions. Should I drive around town in D or should I lock it into 4th - and why? I have done 6000kms so far and did the 1st 5000 using Caltex Vortex and now I have swapped to regular unleaded to see which is better. My average fuel currently is around 16l/100 with 90% highway driving (not towing) which I think is a little high. Premium unleaded was recommended to me by a 100s 6cyl Petrol Auto driver who swears that it performs better and was cheaper to run. I am not convinced that I will see the same in the v8. I have a mate that is getting 13l/100 on the road and 18l/100 in the city in his v8 auto (but he maybe driving 107km/hr while I am in a 110 zone doing 117km/h). Will this motor loosen up any?
Cheers
Justin

Hi H2O,
I would drive around town in 3rd and only go into top gear at around 70 or 80km/h because you have no engine braking in 4th. You will go through brakes a lot faster if you use 4th in the city.

I should also add that my last 4by had a temp gauge fitted to the transmission and I would notice a significant rise in temperature within the transmission if I used 4th gear at low speed. I was told that I should always lock the converter also when in O/D as some transmissions do to stop the heat build up.

Although I drive a Pootrol and although mine is the dreaded 3.0 I am also playing the "stay out of OD to see what happens" game.

I have done one full lot of fuel [about 117L] using only 3rd gear and will do the same this lot of fuel and see what happens. I did use OD if travelling over 80klm/h but as I drive in the Perth metro area this was very little.

So far I've got 953 klm out of the first run, which is much the same as the last 3 years when I have just let in run in OD all the time.

Justin,

It makes more sense to use overdrive where possible, because the revs are lower for any given speed. Let the Automatic gearbox change in and out of OD which it will from time to time. As for Engine Braking, manual shifting into third gear when "coasting" down a hill will stop you unnecessarily riding the brakes like I see many people do.

Manual selection of third gear when travelling up a hill will also stop the gearbox auto shifting between drive and overdrive, although this will generally use a little more fuel.

That's my experience anyway. Overdrive is there for a purpose. Use it where practical.

H20,

Well it's got me stumped why all the replies so far have been talking about 4 speed Transmissions.

Anyway I have a 2002 100 series TD Landcruiser with 5 speed Auto, And I use 4th in town and do not change to D (5th) until I'm doing over 90kph.

If I use D (5th) at below 90kph I think it's lagging to much.

Hope that helps a bit.

If you can average 16l/100 your doing quite well I would have thought. I know plenty of people that are doing more like 20-22l/100. Great ride, they only ever needed longer intake runners , a better breathing exhaust and they would use far less fuel. Will be really interesting to see what they do with the new cruisers coming 2007..?

I have a 100 Seies TD and I always do what the owner manual says - stick it in 'D'. I do the same around town.

If I was towing a heavy load and the box was hunting up and down on a grade or into a headwind I would lock it down to 4th.

By all means use the gears downhill - I can never work out why everyone sits on brakes on steep or long grades.
