Hi all. I want to fit 16" x 8" steel rims to my GU 4 to gain the benefits of the 16" tyre
range and steel rather than the 17" alloy factory fits. Has anyone actually done this?
I live in a regional area and it is difficult to try the various rims available.
But I have tried the Mangels 0 mm offset rims but they rub on the brake calipers. ROH say theirs will also scrape.
Most tyre dealers say 16" rims will not fit due to the "larger" brakes. Procom think their heavy duty Rock Crawlers will fit but I am concerned they may be a bit heavy if they do actually fit.
I prefer to keep the wheels legal for Qld Transport with offset about 0 mm (standard is +10mm) and will probably fit 265/75/16" tyres.
Thanks in anticipation,
Les

Hi Les,
Have a look at Ebay, Standard GU steel 16 x 8 rims are fairly common on there.
Cheers Rossco.

Did you know you can get 17" steels for the GU now?

Hi Les B.. Admittedly they were like finding hens teeth after ringing around.. but I found a place in MLB that brought them dwon from
Sydney ( of course they didn't tell me who in
Sydney) but I believe they are "King" brand. I have the reciept at home and will look it up tonight to give you the contact details of the mob I got them from.
Just be aware that the offset is slightly different from the standard alloy. Not by much. The only way I found this out was that Voxson (explore OZ) has the same model GU with the same size Cooper STT's on his car. They fit his fine (just) on the standard alloy rim, but on
mine I had to cut a part of the plastic inside of the mud guard away for it to clear. (sounds bad but took 20 seconds total and no ill effects) there was only a very slight difference but certainly not enough to be of a concern is the advice I have had from numerous tyre
places around as I was initially pretty concerned about the offet being different and all.

Yes Coyote,
If I have to stay with 17's at least steels will be more robust. What size tyres do you have?

Sorry for the delay.. They were King wheels so I am surprised that no one seemed to have them.. anyway..
I got them from Affordable Tyres and Servicing in
Geelong ph (03) 5221 6599.
If you like ask for
Cliff as he is the one who did the runing arou8nd and helped me out and was great. Even when I rang back complaining that they didn't fit (after removing the usless bit of plastic inside the mudguard they did of course fit.)
They were $154 each for black and a bit less for white (bit steep for steel rims but the only ones I could find so what choice did I have I guess) and shipping to ADL was $95,
Good luck.

Forgot to mention. Ihave Cooper STT 285/70/R17.. A mate of
mine has exact same tyres on GU stnandard Alloy 17" and they fit without the mudguard issue. (ever so slight difference in offset apparently)

On my previous patrol 99 2.8 GU, I had 16x8 Alloy rims (can't recall what tyres) and before I sold it I tried them on my 05 GU and they were fine.. No probs whatsoever.

Do you know for certain if the standard GU 16 x 8" steels will fit the GU 4. I do'nt have access to any here to try them.
Thanks Les

Hi Les,
Don,t completely know for sure but I am under the impression that all models running gear is the same, if 17's fit 16's would almost have to fit, I have the 16 x 8 steels on
mine with 265/70/16 tyres and they have acres of room.
Cheers Rossco.

The 16" should fit, they have identical running gear, DX models still come out with 16" steels
King wheels are availiable from Bob Jane, they are OK........ Good value maybe the best way to put it. Finish is only paint and they arent sealed where two pieces meet so will rust quickly I reckon around here
ROH are a bit dearer but I would spend the money next time

The DX models have 16 x 5.5" width wheels that probably do not overlap the brake calipers as much to cause interference.
I am still preferring a positive response to fitting 16 x 8 steels!
Thanks, Les

Les,
Yes you are right but they also have a "wide wheel option" which is steel 8 x 16 wheels, and 265/70/16 tyres (taken from the Nissan brochure)
The brake issue may be on the 4.8 petrols as they do have larger brakes on the front, all diesels are no change from the old running gear
Im going through the same thoughts now, except I have a good set of 16 tyres which I want to keep, but it only costs around $500 to swap new 17 tyre for some 10 ply Coopers too, ie around the same cost as 5 new 16" rims

Hi,
Bob Jane in Epping (Vic) just supplied me with five BFG muddies - 285/75/16's on 16"*8" steel rims....I asked for a Sunraysia rim. Can find the exact brand of the wheel if you like but they are just a Sunraysia lookalike - got them in the black.
Got to reccommend the service and pricing at this store, ask for Ashleigh....right from the start he gave me his best price - no haggling required and all on 12 months interest free @ just $2100! they fixed a couple of punctures for free and were generally fantastic.
Went out on the weekend; other than the front mudflaps - no problem what so ever...had to remove the front mudflaps due to rubbing but I will just replace these with a piece of rubber soon. Better do those diff breathers now!
Regards
Rod

Hi Les and Rod
Can't see what models you drive, so not sure if we have an answer.
I see on other lists people running 17" for city and 16X8 steels for bush (4.2's 2005 GU4)
Some models, like 4.8 have larger diameter brakes , and so what fits on diesel may not fit on petrols.
On my 2002 4.8, only the Trak11 16X7 steel wheels fit with new brake pads and
speedy 16X7 will fit when brake pads are worn, as they have 5mm less offset, and brake caliphers do float , so watch for that, I got caught.

I asked Bob Jane while in
Cairns last week they could only suggest 17" steels from ROH for the GU4! Yes I would like to know the brand of your 16" steels.
Thanks Les

I phoned Ashleigh at BJ's Epping he said you have the Mangels rim with a -25mm offset. Now since the factory alloy is offset to +10mm your extra offset is now 35mm outwards. Do your tyres protrude beyond the flares by much and in particular the RH rear tyre? My rear
suspension is lifted by 70mm which has the effect of moving the axle nearly 15mm outwards to the right. Plus your 285 tyres must exaggerate this more. Do you need to fix flares to your flares to keep the vehicle strictly legal?
Also apart from the tyres touching the inner plastic does the extra offset affect the steering?

Les,
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you, been enjoying those tyres over the weekend!
The tyres do protrude from the guard - probably an inch or so, the side rails cover this nicely....I have yaken them off only minutes before reading this, next weekend I will take a few pictures for you. I wont be extending the guard as I don't see it as neccesary.
The steering is slow, but otherwise good...I would say this is due to the extra flex in the tyre, basically I turn the wheel and the car begins its turn a split second later. Otherwise it is hard to tell they are actually on the car until I hit the sticky stuff and realise everyone else has come to a stop.....:)

Hi Les,
Don't be overly concerned by the ProComp
Rock Crawlers (that is ProComp we're talking about not a firm called Procom),
the Rock Crawlers are what are destined for my rig, an '03 Patrol TD6 (4.2).
The weight difference comes from more & better welding spots & I've been told that they use a higher (slightly thicker) gauge steel in the construction of the rims, so they can take more of a beating in the rough, ie: more BANG for your buck.
Anyway, you will make the right decision in your choice of rims.
Cheers

Yes I am a bit concerned about the weight because I would be going from the factory alloys with 6 ply tyres to steel rims with larger 10 ply tyres and it might affect the handling a bit not to mention the extra strain on my ailing back! As I live in a remote area I will have to ring Procomp and get some kind of guarantee they will fit the GU4 so my money is not wasted on freight.

Hi Les
so what's happening? Which steel rims are you getting? The Rockcrawlers are heavier, but stronger & better made, hence they cost a little more, but you can get lighter steel rims which are average in overall ability, they also cost less!
If wieght is a big concern stick with factory standard wheel size & get the lighter steel rims, the bigger wheel size adds a lot of rubber to the equation which equals more wieght.
Anyway horses for courses, you'll pick what suits you best when you get all the facts!
madCrow (again!)
I'll be interested to know you choice.

Last Tuesday (25th) I ordered the RockCrawler Series 51 (white) 16' x 8" from Procomp. 3/4 hour later they ring to say there is no stock and do not know when the next shipment will arrive. After reassuring me that the Series 51 (black) will fit my GU4 I agreed to accept them. Offset is 0mm where factory alloys is +10mm.
Expect to receive them next Tues. Hope black wheels look ok on a silver vehicle!
Thankyou all for your advice. I will post a comment when they are fitted and proven.

Hey Les
I'm jealous already, black is the colour of the rims that I'm lining up to get on my Patrol & my truck is white with the black wheel guards, your silver will be excellent with black rims. Personally black rims make the vehicle look very solid & sure footed on the road!
Also re: the fitting of the rims onto Nissan Patrol hubs, what I was told by Paul (one of the staff members @ ProComp) is that the rims are custom machined to fit the hubs.
I suppose this just adds to the uniqueness of Patrols!
madCrow
hear from you later!
