Hi all
I have recently had a snorkle fitted to my 120 after reading on the LCOOL site that the
water fording depth with a toyota bar on is only around 500mm and
water can still get in under this depth throgh the cut in the plastic guard.
Since doing so my fuel consuption on the first
tank jumped from around 14.5 ltr per 100km to around 18. All beit 500km of this
tank was towing the camper. The second
tank has returned around 16 ltrs per 100km with about 50% on road and 50% off road.
When I first purchased the car I was getting around 14ltr per 100 fully loaded and the roof rack full including off road driving at
stockton and the blue mt's.
My question is how can I check if the thing is tuned properly or is it just adjusting to the increase in air intake as it retuns it's self ?
I am remiss to take it back to Toyota dealer as they were, lets say less than accurate on the last two
services.
any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Hi Kev just fitted a factory Nissn snorkle to our 05 Navara 3di and had the same problem with fuel consumtion, so I fitted a safari
snorkel sock and problem solved

Hi,
Funny thing is a few weeks ago whilst on a club trip one of the hilux drivers started complaining about a "lack of power" - one of the other club members suggested he swap the top part of the
snorkel over for the "safari" type and hey presto - lot's more power on hills and I would say this should lead to better fuel economy. I have a new nissan with the genuine nissan
snorkel and I would be curious if there is anything in this? I guess these things have a "ram air effect" similar to a motorcycle?

Trev,
I think the tuning may take a while to adjust.
From the LCOOL site they talk about 5000k to adjust between premium and standard unleaded. So I think any changes take a while to have an effect.
Two years ago I was getting 13.5l/100 around
Wollongong. Slowly this went up.
Three thousand k's ago I put new ATR's on and the consumtion has crept up to 14.6l/100.
I've also tried premium in this time but not much was happening.
So basically I'm thinking changes in consumption and adjustment of the fuel management system is pretty slow and may take about 5000k as per LCOOL comments.
I'm basing my comments frm the onboard consumption figures from the computer.

Just wondering PradoTrev is yours a diesel or petrol?
I reckon my fuel consumption of my diesel is atrocious as
well.
I have just learnt to live with it. I also have a safari
snorkel fitted from 410km old.
It has now got 27 000 km on it.
Just interested.

Hi 120
Mine is a petrol with a safari snork from arb . The consuption has been good on trips (
mine sits around just waiting to go away and i use the Company car daily so most of the milage i long dist) I did notice the pick up has been improved so much so I got air under all 4 the other week end on a sand
hill I normaly would not have. I love the car but i dont like fillling it.
Mine two years old on Sat and has about 25k on the clock.
I used to live in Glenwood in
Sydney and am glad I did not have it in
Sydney traffic due to the stop start. the fuel would have been through the roof moving the 2 ton off from each light.
I plan to do the Vic highlands at xmas might see you down there.

By fitting a snorkle you increase the air intake whitch gives a slight increase in power so by decreasing the air intake with a snorkle sock it should all end up tickertyboo . The sock also stops that sucking noise, and with a Nissan Navara trust me you dont need any more noise and besides 40 dollars is a cheep fix with a bit more filltration.

I would say drive a
tank full without towing and offroading and it should get back
to previous fuel figures.
