Touring outack Qld for the first time, I wasn't surprised to find there were a few places where LPG wasn't available. There's a pretty good website that maps out suppliers and that was expected. What it doesn't tell you is the amount of suppliers that run out of supplies. Maybe it's improving but it puts costs up a bit. As a keen sea-kayaker, I don't normally get too far away from the coast, so it isn't normally an issue for me. Most paid: 90c at Adels Grove., where ULP was 1.66 and diesel another 5/6c. Hema maps are inaccurate with their indicators. eg: They have LPG at Thargomindah where there is none, and none at Charleville where they've been selling it for well over 10 years. I'll stick to my 90L/90L set up whilst I travel mainly coast roads but it's little wonder most of the locals and regular travellers use diesel in these areas. Great experience though. Awesome country and some great people.

Steve:
Further to your posting re LPG outback, we went round the block last year towing a 16.5 ft poptop van. I have a Pajero NL on gas/petrol. I only used 2 tankfuls of petrol in a total of over 18000 km. We tend to go to a spot and use that as a base to explore. Gas is available pretty well everywhere - you just have to plan your trip around the availability. Naturally, we stuck mostly to sealed roads with the van (not allowed to get dust inside! - although that is fairly well controlled now). We got the Pajero very dirty at times however with day trips.

Dearest gas I bought was about 95c/L at Sandfire and also across the Nullabor. Typical prices were in the high 70's and 80'severywhere we went. We have about 300 -350 km range available from 68L of gas. I have about 50L of petrol if needed.. Petrol was at the time up to $1.74, so we were well in front - even cheaper than a diesel towing a van.

I was in Cunnamulla a few weeks back - no gas there. A few years back, We went thru SW QLD and no more gas from Charleville to Broken Hill.

As stated, gas is available in most areas - you just have to look for it. By the way, I live in Cooma - LPG is 75.9 c/L here. It was 71.9 c?l in Bourke! It is even cheaper in Broken Hill! LPG is about 25c/L cheaper in Canberra and that is only 120 km up the road. Someone is being ripped off.

Hope this helps other traveller who use LPG.

You did well Bob. Before we left we knew there'd be a couple of runs we'd have to do on petrol. Going from St George to Augathella meant we'd have to go about 100ks on petrol, likewise Burke and Wills to Lawn Hill and return would see us run out and do 200/250 on Ulp. Quite happy to accept that. Trouble was, when we got to Augathella the pump was out of order. On we went to Tambo and they'd run out of supplies. We eventually filled up at Blackall. It was exactly the same coming back. Further north, we got some at Burke and Wills going, but they'd run out on the way back, and McKinlay had some on the way back but not on the way up. We're not likely to do a lot of outback travel so it won't affect us much again. As things are LPG is definately the way too go for us coasties as we like our watersports/beaches etc and have plenty of supply locally, but I can see why blokes on here say diesel is the only way for the outback. Maybe we were unlucky, but overall probably didn't fall too far behind equivalent costs in diesel, if at all and certainly ahead of petrol vehicles.

just to re-cap we probably used the equiv of about 3 tanks 9approx 900 ks) of ulp out of 6,000 ks. We didn't plan the trip around LPG availability as I didn't want to compromise on where we wanted to go. On average there'd be around 70c difference between ulp and lpg. We perhaps paid something like $180/190 extra, over and above the cost of gas.
