Leaving Brisbane in the morning, and still not sure where we're going. A couple of friends from Switzerland are flying in this afternoon, and we plan on leaving tomorrow morning. Taking the Patrol and my work Rodeo dual cab. Both cars are basically packed. Only have about 15 days till they fly back - so it will be rushed.

Expect to be in Birdsville in about three days time, and then have about nine days to get them the desert experience. Was thinking of going QAA to Poeppel corner, K1, Warburton, Walkers Crossing, Innaminka, cordillo road back to Birdsville.

Looking for suggestions - time will be limited - are we trying to go too far?
Other suggestions for that area?

Our visitors are experienced desert travellers, and have crossed the simpson in their own vehicle on previous visits, and have travelled deserts extensively in Africa. We, the locals, have a little less experience. The only request they've made, is that they get to visit the desert again.

All suggestions considered?

Thanks in advance.

Why not go Birdsville, cross simpson, up to Finke then cross to Uluru and then back north via three ways.. it all depends on do that want to see the country of experience it.. you can do the drive in that time , but of course most of it will be spent on the car seats..
Maybe go down birdsville track up Oodnadatt a and back across Simpson?

Sorry to dissapoint, but the Walkers Track crossing is officialy closed (again).

Maybe cross the desert to Dalhousie & nick back down & around to Marree, to Lyndhurst & back to Qld via Innamincka & the Strz track

Apart from that, the itinerary looks OKif you all have a high tolerance for packing up each & every morning...........this is an activity that some do not take a shine to. Myself.....couldn't give a hoot. It's all better than work!

Cheers

Riiight now I got it.. yeah I have Great desert maps here in front of me and there is a psot called walkers crossing on the track between Innaminka and Nirdsvill etrack, but thereis another track further north tha leads to the B'Ville development Rd and might be more feasible..

Coyote, Walkers Crossing Track is between B'ville Tk & Strzelecki Tk.

Rosco, afaik, closed due to rain. Before you go away in Sept, ask again here . Someonme will know.

in the last 7 days, Marree had 13 mm; Kalamurina (N-W of Mungerannie , which is approx halfway along Birdsville track) had 17 mm; Arkaroola 34 mm; Oodnadatta 4 mm; William Creek 12mm. There are very few official rainfall stations in the Dead Heart of Australia!

The Federal Govt has just provided exceptional drought relief for this region ( read access to Centrelink & other subsidies). It is currently awful up there...............the bones of nature laid bare, indeed.

Cheers

So, your packed, ready to go, leaving in the morning, and have not bothered to plan until now?

How do you know what to pack if you dont know where your going?

I was waiting for someone to say that. I wonder how many of us thought it? Perhaps some prefer to wing it - pack the lot, pick a direction out of a hat and see what eventuates!

It's easy.

Summer take the light gear.

Winter take the warmer gear.

Heading west - take all the water jerry's

Along the coast - only a small amount of water containers.

Along the coast - rely on onboard fuel.

Heading west - extra jerry's of fuel.

Basic equipment is always the same.

Couldn't be easier.

A well thought out reply Andrew and totally appropriate.
As you stated, both couples have travelled through the outback before so you are not exactly inexperienced.

Enjoy your trip, wherever you go!
