Just wanted to know some opinions on the right and wong of the following situation.

Good friend of mine got an astra.
He paid extra for an extended warranty.
Wanted to get it serviced on time, dealership could not fit him in.
Went to another holden dealership nearby.
Computer chip went bust.
Dealership he bought it from wont cover warranty cause he got it serviced elsewhere.

My advice was he should stink up the dealership he got it at but I would just like some general consencus on if in reality this is fair enough or ought to be taken further by my mate.

Thanks.

F4,

I'd be writing letters etc to the DP. Going elswhere (Sounds genuine anyhow) can't cause the computer failure. Sounds like the brush off story to save the dealer money. At the end of it all, remember never to buy from them again if the treatment stays the same.

Regards
Greg

That sounds ridiculous. Dealer Principal is the person you need to speak to when the boffins behind the counter hand out grief like that.

Extended warranties are a mixed bag. The majority are designed to lock you into getting your vehicle serviced by that dealer, so they can make money that way. Thats why the salesmen throw them in for free.

Must be very careful when signing up for these extended warranties, for this reason. depending on the fine print in the warranty statement some sdealers specify the car must be returned to that dealership for service and repairs, unless prior approval is given (if you are on holidays etc.) unfortunatly the selling dealer is quite correct in voiding the warranty in these cases. however if it is a new car and still within the factory 3 year period holden should still honour the warranty. In most cases extended warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on, dealers will always find reasons not to honour them. hope you mate has some luck with the dealer.
Cheers Andrew

Thanks, I will pass all this on to my mate. This guy is what many of us would class as poor and he wanted this car to save him costly repairs in the long run. As I say personally I would go hard on holden but I didnt quite know if it was their responsibility or not. Although there is an extended warranty I should mention the car is still under the standard warranty, I probably made it unclear by even mentioning that at all. I have repeatedly told him to make a fuss but he paid the money, fixed the car and let it slide. I will advise that he can probably take it further.

I was about to "criticise" Andrew's reply until he mentioned the FACTORY warranty.

If it's still within the standard warranty period then it is the manufacturer that covers the warranty. The Dealer only performs work on its behalf.

"Every Holden comes with Holden's New Vehicle Warranty, the vehicle workmanship and materials are covered against defects for the first 3 years, or 100,000kms, whichever comes first. This factory backed warranty covers the engine, transmission, clutch, interior and exterior components including corrosion".

I would go back to the Dealer and ask them to put their rejection in writing, so he can then take that to Holden's Customer Assistance centre.
Any Holden dealership or Authorised Service Centre can perform work on the vehicle without voiding the factory warranty.

Holden WILL act on any adverse reports of inappropriate Dealer performance.

Hi there F4Phantom, did he buy it new or second hand ??. If he bought new he is covered by holden nationwide, if he bought second hand then that can be a different story. Some dealerships if bought second hand state that the vehicle must be serviced by there dealership and no one else, but if bought new he is definately covered or if he did by second hand and still under the new carwarranty, in other words is under 3 years old and less then I think 100,000klms then he is still covered. I know when I bought my toyota new I took out extended warranty extra 2 years BUT it had to be serviced by toyota no 1 else eg lube mobile could not do it or you voided warranty. Give it to them if you are covered dont let him be pushed around if the computer has gone bang, otherwise he will be up for $1000 plus for a new one, and buy the way the computers in these things go bang all the time common problem. If thats the case F4Phantom, and he's had it serviced by the book as you said then there is no doubt he is covered 100%, doesnt matter what dealer serviced it, it is under warranty, and computer is covered. Rip it up them. Regards Steve M

If it's a European astra i'm quite suprised as these things run quite well.
If it is the latest Astra it's straight out of the Dogwoo factory and they are heaps of dog doo.
Tell him to go back to the Holden dealer and ask for a full refund of his money.
If he doesn't get it, lodge it in the small claims court and give Today Tonight and A Current Affair a call

You may consider calling holden themselves and speak to someone in the customer relations dept. I'm sure they would like a dealer treating potential future customers like this and may lean on the dealership a little.
