Call it by its Aboriginal Name if you choose in preference to its Anglo name, but if you're going to cal it by it's Anglo name get it right.

It is Ayers Rock.

Actually mate,,,when i was a lad,,,(shoot, does this mean i'm getting old?), we simply called it the bloody big rock in the middle of Australia. Aboriginal heritage or Anglo heritage is completely irrelevant as far as that rock is concerned. It was here long before any of us, and will be long after we are all gone.
Its a rock, and a damn big one, but so is that one in W.A.,,,,,,hmmmmm,,,,,which one of them is older? Now that is worth debating...lol.
We as a peolpe of this land need to figure out that we are all the same, no matter what shade of tan we have,,,,coz we all end up in the same place after we take that last breath. So i reckon its simple for all to get along,,,,,treat each other as eaquals, and lets all get on with enjoying the time we have on this planet.....

meow.

rick.
p.s. not a dig at you Jim,,,,just stating what i think on the whole subject in general.

It was never a racist comment Rick.

Just about calling things of our National Heritage by their correct name.

I'll repeat......

It is Ayers, NOT Ayres.

Mt Augustus is older by about 400 million years (and twice as big). Debate it all you like...LOL

Similar to the commonmistake of calling the Kimberley, the Kimberleys.

Also annoys me when people dont know the difference in lose and loose.

But I digress...

I was spelling bee champion and i find many spelling mistakes everyday, i don't bother mentioning them any more.

Nearly all new publications call it Uluru now anyway so the name Ayers rock will eventually pass into history.

This one is my favourite. I cringe every time I see an example.

This sort of mistake has to come from a severe decline in the number of hours younger people actually spend reading these days. I can spell because I was taught to "visualise" the spelling of a word in context. I'm not sure how young people are taught these days - but they're either not listening or the school curriculum is inadequate.

I love their response to criticism over it too - "it's not important"...

LOL!!

Unfortunately the most reading they do is on websites and SMS messages and as the spelling there gets worse, it will only lead to spelling that's even worse. Or laziness like "prolly" or "dis".

When writing gets that bad that people have trouble understanding it, then we stop communicating effectively.

Hopefully those who have difficulty spelling correctly will make the effort to use the "SPELLING" button that David has gone to great effort to add.

Remember, if someone doesn't correct the bad spelling you see in a post, it will only encourage ten other readers to consider the bad spelling as correct or acceptable. Sure, we'll get bagging when we do it, but if you believe that a single agreed way of spelling words is important for effective communication, then we have to persevere.

I am sure the many people that did not have your access to education , will appreciate it , when you point out their spelling errors .

Mike,

You'll find a lot of younger (especially the 30-40 age group) were taught at school that the spelling was not important.
They were taught the importance was on getting people to understand what you are writing.

I know, because our son is in that age group, and we had all sorts of debates (arguments) with the school over his spelling.
He suffered later when writing CV's.

Our daughter on the other hand was taught that correct spelling is important.

So, I accept the way people do write, and I wouldn't embarrass them on a forum like this for the above reasons.

Geoff.

My mother often berated me about my poor spelling. Looking at some of the spelling in forum posts makes me a spelling bee whizard. Another annoying trait is the habit of some people to not use capitals at the start of sentences. As far as the name of natural monuments why not be proud of the Aboriginal's names of them. I find it hard to get my tongue around some but that is my problem. Be proud of the Aboriginal's heritage now we are living in their country. We "white folks" certainly do not have one, that is if we discount our war efforts.

In everyday, non-technical usage the words have much the same meaning. But they have such clearly defined and fixed compounds that they can’t be thought of as entirely interchangeable. The difference is that engines contain their own fuel or are part of a highly integrated engine-fuel system, whereas a motor draws on externally supplied energy.

You are right mate but there are lots of things where it is best to know you are on the right track. If you were in Adelaide and someone wrote a message to you about going out the Princess Highway, but you have been thinking out towards home, you would be going the wrong way.

There is a thing about our fingers and the keyboard in front of us, we don't always hit the correct key sequence, so typos ocurr. I have to re-read my writing for that, and also for the incorrect spelling of a word as I had the wrong write/right above. I see also I didn't hit one key at all in an earlier posting!

Hope all the family are triffic mate..

I have never read such trash on this forum .

A lot of people just cannot spell . Maybe they were denied a decent education or maybe their financial situation did not allow it - whatever .

But you holier than thou spelling wizards are going to pour your scorn on them and embarrass them , when they make a post .

You are LOSERS LUSERS LOOZERS

But now all they have to do (as I do) is click on the SPELLING button, and their posts will be as easy to read as everyone elses.

another way to look at it is, there are people in beirut digging through rubble for their kids at this point in time.
Maybe people are bad typists, not bad spellers.

Sorry Bro, I tend to disagree. I've read a heap of such trash on this forum. A lot of it written by me LOL.

I think most of us would accept the advice providing it was given in the right spirit.

How does one learn, if one's mistakes are not pointed out to one??

Confucius say.....
"He who lie underneath automobile with tool in hand,
....Not necessarily mechanic!!"

Ed, thinking that 'people should spell correctly' is mistaking your opinion for what is right.

This 'pointing out mistakes' business; if we weren't sitting at screens but instead were all talking face to face, would we all be standing around pointing out each others' incorrect pronunciation? 'Oh my, you just dropped a 'g'. 'Did you here that, Dagworth, that fellow there dropped a 'g'. I think I need a lie down and a cup of tea'.

"thinking that 'people should spell correctly' is mistaking your opinion for what is right."

- so does this mean that every time someone expresses an opinion on this forum they need to state "this is not fact as accepted by a majority of experts in this field, but only my opinion."

Surely the majority of posts here are accepted as the writer expressing their opinion.

Mike, that statement was purely for Ed in regards to 'pointing out mistakes' so I pointed his out. I'm guilty of poor quality satire.

No, we do not have to be precise in regards to stating 'this is only my opinion', but it seems there's a consensus that spelling needs to be precise though. Both issues are to do with communicating correctly, so it could be said there is a lack of consistency; but that's only my opinion :-)

"I'm guilty of poor quality satire. "
- the poor quality of satire in this forum is really reducing my enjoyment of it.

Will you start a new thread on this or do I have to do it ?

LOL
Humour is in the mind of the beholder, which makes it very hard to quantify. Perhaps we can duel philosophically on this subject 'round a campfire some time.

"The purpose of language is communication. Regardless of errors in spelling, grammar etc, if a second party understands what is being communicated by a first party, communication is successful. All other thoughts, comments etc regarding the quality of the communication are pedantic and anal and should be relegated to the arts"

It isn't the poor spelling by the general population that annoys me, it's the spelling errors made by advertising agencies & journalists, who are, in fact professional wordsmiths.
Although, I can't understand how people can see a word, or words day after day, & still get it wrong.

Because more and more, they see the word mis-spelt in a blog or SMS, and prolly assume that's the way to spell it.

It's great to see this stirring up so much comment.
I had begun to accept that no one cared about spelling or grammar.

Seems there are two camps, one lot who care about it and one who don't.

What I'd like to know is what the non-carers intend to do when in a few years someone's communication has become so riddled with errors so as to be incomprehensible.

Sure, language evolves, but when it can no longer be readily understood it ceases to serve it's purpose.

GoneTroppo, I care about MY spelling and grammar because that's the way I was taught and I also enjoy writing. As for others' spelling and grammar it's 'live and let live'.
Language is evolving right now. Aren't we using emoticons and LOL and IMHO etc in our posts? Is that so different to SMS talk using 'u' for 'you' and 'r' for 'are'? Anyone remember carving something like 'Brian + Jenny 4 ever' into a tree trunk?
It will never be inconmprehensible because we adapt.
