I've recently returned from a 8500km, three week trip visiting a couple of cattle stations in the
Pilbara. During that time, I was breath tested eight times.
All the Police were a pretty good bunch, apart from one mob in
Ceduna.
Whilst this may be expected on the tourist route, there were some isolated areas where I was pulled over.
Which brings me to the reason for this post. Don't think your safe from breath testing in remote areas. Caught once, thousands of Km's from home, you'll have significant problems if somebody else can't drive the car back home.
New travellers to the Outback should also be aware there are increasing restricted trading hours on the supply of grog in many areas.
Regards
Kim

Yes, but they do it in style in the Outback. At least they'll have a bit of a yarn with you.
Tell you where some of the good out of the way spots are and, get a meal in the bush (if you know what I mean).

Nothing to stop you continuing on your trip if you blow over - you dont lose your liscense until it goes to court.
I have never seen a copper in a remote area but the coppers in
Nullagine are pretty active on brethos and speeding through town (50k)

Hi Davoe,
If you blow over here in SA, it is on
the spot loss of licence, so there is no way out of it.
It is the same for speeding, over 40kms kms over the posted speed limit an instant loss of licence.

I was in that area and also came home the same way, didnt see a cop except for a "random license check" at
Eucla.
Yes it was a bummer, but they have a rotten job to do.

You wont beleive this, but back in August 98 a copper from
Leigh Creek breathoed 3 of us entering the
Simpson Desert on the
Oodnadatta end. Will never forget about talking about it in the
Birdsville Pub, and a local said "that's that cop Terry Nancarrow from
Leigh Creek- he's an ar-----" I remember that as though it was said yesterday. The poor cops probably a Forumite!! Any one know the bloke just doing his job? Regards Nick

In NSW the number of fatalities involving alcohol has halved since Alcohol limits have been enforced by breath testing.
So there is now half the chance of a person you know being killed because someone thought it was ok to drive after a few drinks too many.
Looking at the number of infringements for people driving at more than twice the limit, it looks like more breath testing will make the roads even safer.
Yes, I enjoy a drink before driving, but
well under the limit.

"So there is now half the chance of a person you know being killed because someone thought it was ok to drive after a few drinks too many"
Cold comfort - most accidents are (and will continue to be) caused by completely sober people. Take Care.
Cheers

Hi there Greg, A lot of accidents I agree with you can and do happen with the most sober person behind the wheel, but there is also alot of accidents that are caused by some one having too many and think that they are ok to drive. I'm probably like you and most people here on this
forum like to have a beer or two and yes I have had 1 or 2 at the local then drive home but I have never since having a licence ever jumped in my vehicle to drive after knowing I have had even 1 too many, and if I'm planning a long drive the next day I wont even have one. I value my life and my familys and yours as
well and every body else thats on the road or even walking the footpath as said before if any of my family was klled by some bleep jumping in a car knowing they had too many god help them and I presume there would be alot of people on here that would be thinking the same thing. Regards Steve M

I can remember having one beer after fishing at
Copeton Dam NSW, then going for a shower right on sunset and was the last car pulled up for a breath test inside the Dam area. Would never have thought they would be in that sort of place. Lucky I don't have more than one beer when I am driving. Not like the old days when it was a three can trip from Maroubra to Ingleburn.

Hi V8,
Here is the sequence:
Outside Horsham
Port AugustaCeduna Eucla (twice)
Norseman
Leonara
Meekatharra
I think I just missed out on one, West of
Wiluna where the road works are.
After leaving the
Kumarina Roadhouse, we turned off onto station tracks. Peace at last!
I said to the last cop "With all this puffin n' blowin I've been doing, a man has'nt had a chance to have a drink.
Regards
Kim

Kim,
You'll just have to stop zigging and zagging and swaying to the music as you drive!
It's too obvious mate.

Sandman,
Your just so right. What with all this blowin n' puffin, zigging, zagging and swaying I've lost sight of the big picture.
Tonight I'll sit down, have a drink or two and give due consideration to my outrageous behaviour.
Regards
Kim
