I'm just sitting here musing in general and I have just remembered a book that I read a couple of years ago which I thought would interest people on this site.
The book is called "The Man Called Possum" and it is about a shearer who lived off the land for 50+ years with minimal contact to the outside world. It was in the Wentworth/
Mildura area. The book was written by Max Jones. Do a google on it, there is heaps of info online.
If anyone has read it before, I would be interested to hear your thoughts.
Very deep I know for a Friday but I will redeem myself at the pub later on.

Just a fantastic story of a man who turned his back on society! Have heard many great stories about the man (knew the gentleman who was the Lock Master at Lock 6 above
Renmark who came across him often). Highly recommend reading it, you will not believe how this man could have survived as long as he did like he did. Many good tips also....like he would not go down to the river at night as this was when the snakes came out to eat the frogs!!! Oh!!! Beware of the Blue Crane (Grizzle will get this one).
Happy Reading
Phil

Max Jones has written a number of books that made interesting reading. He was the detective sergeant in
Renmark for many years and he still lives there I think.
Possum came to Australia from New Zealand during a shearers strike and couldn't get work because he never had a ticket so he lived along the banks of the Murray for many years as a recluse. Tracks was another good read.

Tracks is a book about the Aboriginal trackers who worked with Max Jones.
The people at Gerard were from all parts of SA and there were people there from traditional areas who were very good trackers. The most famous of these was
Jimmy James. There were in fact two
Jimmy James's who were trackers. The original
Jimmy James was from
Marree. When he died his son-in-law
Ooldea Jimmy (from
Ooldea SA) took on the name
Jimmy James and continued on as a tracker. The
Jimmy James in the bood by Max Jones is in fact
Ooldea Jimmy.

Phil, I presume your in
Renmark then. The last I heard of him was about a couple of years ago, he was not in good health and blind but I had not heard that he had passed away so I hope he is still going.
Perhaps Steve will know.

Hi Des,
I am actually in
Adelaide but the family has a houseboat mored at the Jane in
Renmark for the last 20 years so spend a fair amount of time up there. I new that he had lost his sight, allthough it did happen over time, I would be guessing he would be a fair old age now if he were still alive. Where are you situated?

Certainly has, I remember when we first started going there. It was when Ian had done the trial plot to prove to all the people that said he would never get anything to grow there that he could. It is just a shame the way it all ended up and the way he was pushed out of the whole thing. I would say if it had all gone his way it would be finished and in a better way, he would never have allowed the condos that are now built on what used to be all the public land on the waterfront by the tower.
Was in
Berri earlier in the year for the kneeboarding comps, spent a very enjoyable afternoon at the cafe by the visitors center there. A great little spot to sit back and enjoy a bit of the amber liquid :-)

Hi Kumunara (SA),
My brother (dec.) was born at
Cook hospital (on the Nullarbor) in 1946. At that time there was a little Aboriginal baby/toddler there who won the hearts of all & sundry!
His name was Sidney James and he was from
Ooldea, to my knowledge. Wonder if he is the
Jimmy James or maybe related to #2?
Must look out for those books.

Hi folks,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Possum passed away quite some time ago and was buried on one of the stations up there.
Regards
Kim

I had a good friend who had a property down near
Wentworth many years ago and he told me that Possum would come through there occasionally and he would fix up fences and do any little jobs that needed doing, without making contact with my friend. These jobs were just done, and Poy would come along perhaps looking for some sheep and notice that some work had been done along the fence or whatever.
My friend would leave out a pair of boots or clothing or a bag of salt for Possum, and he would find them and disappear into the yonder. One thing that Possum did appreciate was a bag of salt, so he could keep some food a bit longer by salting it.

A wonderful story of an amazing man. My "hazy" memory seems to recall Ray Martin of TV fame doing a story on Possum some time back. An inspiration to all.
