I realise that this subject has been flogged recently through this forum, but I can't find anything on accomodation along the Great Ocean Road.

I am taking the family on a return trip- Orange to Mt Gambier and wil be following the Great Ocean Road (highway) from Geelong through to Mt Gambier. I have spent the last few weeks researching accomodation along the Victorian section, but I have found personal referrals to be better than marketing ones.

So, I am after any information on suitable places to stay along this route. We are on a budget due to the price of fuel, with our preffered accomodation being cabins and/or camping.

I would appreciate any information that you can shed on where to stay, some less known sights and any other information. We have two weeks to enjoy the sights and will be down there at the start of November.

Thanks...

Hey Pajboy,
all the towns have caravan parks and most have cabins also, Warrnambool has heaps of facilities, Port Campbell also has a reasonable caravan park.
Between the 2 I found a spot a few weeks ago which would be great if it wasn't windy, I'm not sure if camping is allowed but there looks to be a grassy area on the cliff tops over looking the bay of islands.
As for camping the western side of the Aire River in on Horden Vale Road is good.
down near Cape Otway there is blanket bay and crayfish bay which are right near the beach, blanket bay is more sheltered. between the 2 is fergusson hill, both here and blanket bay have drop toilets.
Beyond there I can't help you.

Port Fairy is a small town on the way past Warnambool, got a cheap motel, and also a caravan park + a couple of nice pubs for some dinner.

Highly recommend Glenelg River - some of the campsites have toilets too.

Cape Otway has some great spots too, although plenty of evidence that at times it gets real busy.

Ciao for now
Andrew.

Hi PAJBOY
I agree with Ivan, Port Fairy is a great spot to stay. I stayed at the BIG 4 caravan park about 6 months ago. There is plenty of camping sites, and cabins if you prefer. There is also plenty of stuff for kids of all ages. Indoor pool, mini golf, playground.
On the way down the coast there is a place called Lavers Hill. There is a glow worm cave near there. Might be a good night time activity depending on the age of your kids. Also at Lorne you can turn right and head to Erskine Falls.
Most of the small coastal towns have caravan parks Anglesea, Cumberland River, Wye River.
Search Google for Great Ocean Road and you will have all the information you need. Any other info you need just ask.
Cheers Andrew

Cumberland River (near Lorne) is a top place to stay. Very very nice , expect for the occassional high winds that can blow a CT over. (Its in a canyon)

They have Cabins.

Thanks guys for all your info. I will definitely use this to work out my trip. There is nothing worse then staying in a 'well known' town and then driving 10km to find some little sleepy village with better facilities and people...only because they don't pay RACV or similar to get listed, they remain unknown.

PAJBOY plan your trip and where you are planning to kip for a night or a couple of days. It is really easy to find cabins along that section of coast but a lot more places you can camp as Nick R identified. If you are keen to camp a place like Peterborough (Vic) is a nice spot too where there are two caravan parks and plenty to see round the area.

The actual Great Ocean Road actually goes though to the Prince's Highway at Allansford but there are many others now that are laying claim, like Warrnambool, Port Fairy and Portland. They are all interesting places but away from the forests or rock formations that we associate with the GOR. Port Fairy the first settlement in Victoria from sealing days. Lovely place with gret real estate values as long as you are used to city ones.
