Hi Guys,
I want to fit a front tow ball to the front of the GU Patrol. It has the genuine Alloy Bull bar so I know I can't mount to it. It will have to mount to the chassis some how but before I go off and re-invent the wheel I thought I would ask around and find out if anybody has installed one. Offset is my wish.
With the laws how they are, I will have to make it so it comes off and on easy. Say like a Hayman Reese receiver fitting, but just thinking at this stage.
I had a Pajero a few years agao and it came with one but it had the whole receiver mount installed under the bull bar. I had to remove it as it was impossible to 4WD with it on.
Any information would be gladly appreciated.
Dave

I've thought about doing this as
well Dave, but have the same issue as you with regard to legality of it being there all the time (although it doesn't seem to be too much of an issue here in the country in SA), as
well as not wanting to mount it lower than the bullbar for approach-angle reasons.
What i thought was, mount the Hayman Reece receiver section on top of the bullbar next to the main upright (I've got a ARB deluxe steel bar) and have a gooseneck with a fair drop in it so that it is at the correct height for your needs. It would have to be super strong as it is only gunna be used to move a trailer/van up a driveway etc at walking speed etc, and the weight on it might be as much as 100kg (probably less in most cases).
Also, with your type of alloy bar, you should be able to cut out one or 2 of the little slats in the bottom, centre section of the bar and fabricate a steel bar across the chassis with the Hayman Reece hitch sitting flush with the front of that grille section; but i don't know how hard it would be to get to the back section of the fitting to put the retaining pin in.
Good luck
Roachie

Save a whole heap of problems::::: Learn to reverse a trailer, If you can't reverse it you shouldn't be towing it.

Rossco,it's not a matter of "If you can't reverse it you shouldn't be towing it." some people have limited room and mongrel drive ways to attend with as my uncle does, can I reverse yes no problems have a semi licence and have no problem but if it makes it easier for one's self then why not, and believe me its easier to reverse a semi than a bleep y box trailer that you cant see. If you cant answer with a constructive answer than maybe you should visit another
forum and show your arrogance there, people like you bleep me off and you probably cant even tow yourself. S.M.

Stephen M, Can you reverse a B Double because I can ,so that just threw your last remark out, If you drive a semi then you would know that in order to get a licence you have to be able to reverse it. I still say if you can't , don't tow it

Yes that is part of license requirement and Im quit sure he would be able to reverse his van where he needs to but is probably trying to make it easier for himself, my uncle use to drive trucks as
well and has no problem reversing either but chose to put the extra tow bar on the front as his drive way has a dog leg in it and is quit steep and doesnt require my aunty to be standing there guiding him it just make's life a bit easier and like all of us we arnt getting any younger. If some one chooses to put a towbar on the front so be it.At the end of the day as said Im sure he can reverse where he needs to just making it easier for himself. Hi RoscoH,
yes I have been reversing boats, traliers and vans for quite a few years, though I don't think I would be as good as you. My problem is I want to back up a steep driveway and then through a
gate opening that is only an 2inches and a bit wider than my van for storage. Yes I can do it, but years ago I had a tow ball on the front of my 4WD and I was able to manouver with far greater accuracy.
I want to do it for ease for me. If you can do it just as easy reversing I envy you, I have to concentrate farmore.
Thanks for your input.

Hi there Dave, you will probably get a reply before i get back to you but yes it can be done. My uncle has it on his patrol and is off set to the passengers side of vehicle so he can see looking forward down the drivers side of his vehicle (passegers side of van) so he can drive it into his garage then when he's ready to go again reverses up to it and drives straight out the drive no trying to reverse as probably like most people dont have alot of room either side of his van. He does have a removable tow bar and also being padantic (if thats the word) has a little dyno tab on his instrument cluster to remind him self to take out towbar. I will try and ring him tonight and see where he had it done and get back to you cant promise tonight as he might be away out bush but might be able to get him on sat phone. Will let you know. Thats great Stephen, even a photo would be fine.
Did he do it himself or did he get it installed?

When I was a Kid my grandfather had this set up on his GQ.
Hade a triangular steel bracket made up with a Tow ball mounted to it, had a steel plate that sat behind the bulbar that the bolts when throe for some reinforcement when it was attached, drilled to holes in the centre of Bulbar Aluminium Nissan one for bolts to go into to secure the bracket to the front and then moved the Number plate to the passenger side of the bar.
When ever he needed to get the caravan or boat into a tight space that couldn’t be done by reversing it he simply took 5 minutes to bolt this bracket on the font of the bar and hooked the Van/ boat up and in she went.
This was all on an Aluminium bar and wasn’t attached to the chaise, and it wasn’t a light van ether the boat was 18-20ft too.
Actually I think Tow ball bracket is still sitting in his shed, if it’s there I can take a photo.
Probably not until the weekend thou
Cheers

Dave
Here is a photo of my GU Patrol it shows clearly how to make it and how it fits on the GU .
I made
mine out of 40mm x 40mm tube so it is a different size than the rear to bar so you can not use it on the back of the car by mistake(SAFETY FIRST).
I made
mine but it would not cost much to have it made I think under $100.
I would not be with out it
Hope this Helps

Thanks for the photo, its the sort of thing I am after. Detachable as
well! I will have to mount on chassis rail as my alloy Bull bar would not be strong enough.

Hmmm,
I would be a bit careful about mounting one on an Air-bag compatible bull bar.
One big jerk and you can't see again:-)))
