Hi Everyone/Drinkers

Does anyone know of a good resonably priced place closer to Adelaide that sells a nice tawny port in bulk?
Yes, we bought Muddy a port keg, he has primed it, filled it, suckled from it and now it needs restocking.
Don't mind the trip up into the Valley but was wondering if there were something closer to Adelaide.
Being still a bit new to this wonderful place, I have no idea.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Muddies,

Not that I drink much...LOL LOL but a good red nosed friend gets his bulk from a small winery down Noarlunga way..will give him a ring tonight and let u know.

BTW 10lt casks are avbl from Clare valley too, an old town drunk used to get mine up until a while ago and I never asked him where, should have 'cos only paid $50.oo per cask.

Cheers (guess that is appropriate..)

Morning Muddies,

It would appear that my friend/pal/mate has gone AWOL, either that or he is too full of plonk to answer the phone or his e-mail..lol

However, judging by the responses so far doesn't look like you will have much trouble getting 'brahms and list' if you track through half of the suggested leads.

BTW just realised that my keg is almost empty too, must be the cold weather..lol lol

Cheers
Michael
-if/when he does get back from where ever it is he has gone to, and I remember to ask him, I will let u know...

Muddy has not seen fit to buy me a subscription.......maybe he will for a wedding present.........lol

Hi Judy, if you wnat it really close, you could go to a good wine merchant and ask but it depends if you want to go North or South. There heaps of wineries just out of Adelaide. Southern Vales begins on the Southern outskirts. Plenty round McLarenvale.

It's a bit hard when one wouldn't know if you are North-side or South-side. Half the fun is trying before you buy.

Hi John

Thought you would've known where Muddy lived.......we're north of the City for your future reference.
LOL...........yes tasting is half the fun but one of us has to stay sober and we strictly obey the drink/drive road rules.........he drinks, I drive.........lol.........but not always in that order!!!

Thanks though for your input!

Bulk Port sellers are becoming rare, due to the fact they have to pay excise on their holdings before they even sell it.

About the closest place I can recommend is the Kies Family Winery just on the left hand side of the road as you approach Lyndoch from Adelaide. They do not use "caramel additives" so the Port matures well in the Keg, if you can keep it in long enough.

Last time I was there, you could buy it a small amount of 5 litre containers, or the bigger size of 20 litres. They know what they are talking about too. I was made to feel guilty of abuse because I had rinsed to container in water before taking it in for a refill. They kindly provided me with replacement containers (2) to take my booze home.

What sort of Keg has Muddy got? There are kegs and there are kegs.
You can get a 4.0 litre, wax lined jobbie that will do little to improve the port, or you can get a keg from somewhere like the Keg Factory cooperage near Tanunda, that use old "used" barrels to convert into Port kegs.

My 9 litre keg from there was made from a keg that previously contained brandy spirit and I have never needed to add any other additive to get a really top port, if I can leave it for a few months, or so.

A mate of mine is really serious. He has a 20 litre keg and a nine litre keg. Fills the nine from the 20 and then tops up the 20 with new port to obtain a more "mature" blend.

Some people add a touch of brandy, or masala to the port, but if you are not careful, you can over do it and end up with a "tainted" batch that loses the port wine flavour, or makes it too sweet.

I'm sure Muddy will enjoy his present nonetheless and enjoy the experience of ageing his own port.

cheers,
Bill.
Bill

Hi Bill

Yes, I know of the Kies Winery, I was very impressed with them when I was here 2 years ago. We actually bought some port from them then. This is where Muddy & I were going too should we have to go that far up to get it.

Muddy's little Keg is just over 4lts and was made from used barrels. We mixed up some bottles we already had here and we actually produced a very nice drop which has mellowed out inicely, even in the short time it has managed to still stay in the keg........lol

Thanks for your info.

If you go to Clare, the Sevenhill winery has got a beautiful bulk port in 15 Ltr containers. Can't remember the price though.
That's all we have been buing for the last 6 - 7 years.

Try before you buy though, it is part of the enjoyment of the trip.

What everybody suggests is a good drop is not necessarily what you like. It's a bit like cars and colours etc. You might like a white Toysan, I might like a red Lada.

Dave (shoudn't have said that about a Lada)

Hi Dave

Thanks for that too and yes I do know what you are saying about tastes. But I'm sure most enjoy a good port and will only direct you in the right direction.
Hey and I'll try anything....once......well most things anyway!!!

Judy,

I'm not sure too much Port is a good idea.

I read in the latest AMA Journal, that due to Port's inherent chemical compound and the high sugar and alcohol content, it has a severely detrimental effect on male libido, decreases fertility and promotes snoring and sleep apnea.

Apparently flatulence is dramatically increased, especially during sleep.

Regards,

Dr Best.

Hi Jimbo

LOL........now I'm a lady so I don't tell secrets, only to say I'm a very happy little woman here.......... :)
Muddy and I both drink it, just for the record.
There is still plenty left in the keg, it's just so it can be kept topped up as suggested in the literature that came with the instructions.

We have taken your advice on board for baby making purposes only though....lol
Thank you for your concern, Dr Best.

You both drink it???

That must be some "Dutch Oven" you have going there.

I strongly suggest you do not have an exposed flame in the bedroom or any other frictional activity that may create enough heat to ignite the impending gas.

It's no laughing matter.

My best wishes for your joint health.

Dr Best.

Has been a while but as a youngster we always refilled our 15 ltr oak barrel requirements via a 20 lt plastic container from St Francis at Reynella. Was 3 of us who took turns buying and sharing the refill.

A splash of muscat and a cup of brandy.......hmmmm Hard to wait until it mellowed (10 mins? LOL)

Try Moving Juice on Lower North East Rd at Campbelltown, opposite the Gorge Rd intersection. They are actually the cellar door for Amadio Wines, not your normal grog shop, so you can taste before you decide what to buy. Not many places in the suburbs let you do that. Their type of license only allows them to sell in bulk. Not a problem for me. Just about everything they sell tastes pretty good, especially their Tawny Port.

Enjoy,

Trev

Muddie,

The Sip and Save on Holbrooks Rd Underdale has bulk port - only 10 minutes from your place. Don't know about the quality or price - I'm a fan of the Penfolds in the 2 litre cask.

Cheers

Duly noted in my book and will be interesting to blend up a few of these over time in the keg and see what we get!
