Cam, It's leaking from the front left hand side at the join between the coil and the outlet chamber.....

Mine has always had a bit of a weep of oil from that area, hasn't got any worse. Up to 180,000ks now.

Allow me to correct your post.
"Has anyone heard of the Intercooler NOT leaking"

OK so I can gauge by the replies that it is not uncommon, is there a way to get it repaired? Would a radiator repair shop be able to do a fix? I don't fancy spending $1k to get a new one and they don't exist second hand...

Hi,
If it is just weeping a bit of oil from the PVC blowby, I would not really worry about it. Unless you can hear it hissing........

The Positive Crankcase Ventilation system that sucks the vapours out of the engine and feeds it into the air intake.

Notso,
thanks for that, no doubt explains the weeping oil but the hissing means loss of pressure, not sure I've noticed a drop in power since the intercooler started leaking, but then again I don't know when it started leaking do I?

Yep mine is hissing. I am looking at a second hand unit so I can install. They go at the front in the first three veins closest the inlet.

Interesting thing is the hiss is only there 1000 to 2000 rpm and when the outside air is very cool <10 deg C. When the ambient air temp rises the hiss (whistle) disappears. It does not matter at what temperature the vehicle is (hot or cold).

Very interesting but annoying.

A fellow on this forum had his welded by a radiator repair shop a while back. Seemed happy.

Yeah, mine was hissing a bit too, might give a local radiator repair shop a try and I'll let you know what happens...

Thanks,

I took mine to an alloy radiator chap who would not weld for some reason.
Interesting to see what your results are

Thanks in advance

Why not take the opportunity to go with a custom made one for a bit better cooling, and performance, you can get em for less than the Genurine nissan ones

BIL had his replaced a while back becasue it was leaking. Gues what the replacement has now started to leak also. I would consider the oportunity to possibly look at a custom made aftermarket job.

do a search for AWILL4X4. I have seen some nice pics of radiators/intercoolers he's built.

Looking through past posts on here, it seems these motors are supposed to run boost of up to 30psi (for short periods of time I gather). I would imagine that those kinds of pressures would be enough to cause an intercooler to develop a small leak with resultant hissing.

However, what would worry me even more would be the amount of oil that blokes are reporting is leaking from such a crack! Okay, so there may be "some" oil/vapour from the PCV set-up, but it shouldn't be enough to show up as an actual oil "leak"; should it? Or, is it possible that this all tied up with the EGR valve (people have reported "gunk" inside the tube when they have removed that valve to either check or to blank it off altogether) and also the MAS? You get those 2 things combining with false readings and the turbo's variable vanes wind themselves up to push more boost into the donk......something's gotta give. It'll either blow an intercooler hose off altogether or blow a crack into the intercooler itself.

awill4x4 made my I/C for 4.2, excellent workmanship, great person to work with, just hates finding a cat stuck in the engine bay as he was fitting it, LOL

Yep, that was one hell of a day John. For those that don't know we had been working on the car for half the day before we even noticed the damn cat was stuck in there. I still haven't figured out how a large cat could possibly get into such a small area, it must have been the alternator pulley rubbing on it's tail that gave it the added incentive I guess.
Regards Andrew.

Roachie, luckily the MAS is up near the airfilter, otherwise yes, it would all be a big chit heap!

I had my 3.0L Patrol for about six years and I and my trustworthy mechanics consider this weeping to be quite normal.

Hi guys
mine has seeped oil as long as I have had it and as yet my boost is perfect, the oil is easily cleaned away every 20,000 km or so as to prevent any chance of cooler blockage that MIGHT occur in dusty contitions. This is a negligable seepage NOT a leak as such. Yes the boost can peak at 30psi so it would be an exeptional core that could contain everything at that kind of boost.

I might add that my 3.0 has proved to be powerful and reliable so far (150000km). I spoke to a nissan mechanic about failures and his reply was "Off record" "these engines CAN (not all) use oil at 100-120kph and the ones that have failed have seemed to be on units driven at high speed for long periods without checking the oil. Also they mostly (if not all) occur on pre 2002 without the larger sump (2002 on has a 8.5ltr sump as opposed to the earlier 6-6.5 ltr sump)"

The clue to longevity seems to be that people understand they need to check oil everytime they put in fuel or every day when touring. We have forgotten these precautions today due to selfserve stations and cars becoming more reliable over the years.

Never forget you have a machine that needs oil as much as we need blood.

I love my 3.0ltr Turbo, more importantly I respect my 3.0ltr Turbo.

On Patrol.

Interesting, Iwas told a similar thing by Nissan in western Sydney. Very reliant on oil level. He said the few that have failed they have found the oil level to be too low. Many towing caravans around the country.

My three litre had the same oil weep and the dealer replaced the intercooler under warrenty, the new one has the same oil weep but no apparent negative effects other than a distinctive audible whine particularly when cold.
