Hi there, i own a Toyota Hilux dual Cab and need all 5 new tyres. now im not a rich man so am wanting to buy cheap (but not the cheapest) tyres.
Does anyone know of which brand i should go for, im after All Terrain tyres and go 4x4ing once or twice a month. I was thinking Kumho at $190 each, i also found Bridgestone at $180e. And i also found Hankook at $190e.

Last time I got tyres I went for the cheapest of the cheapest available. The brand is Motorway and I got the MT's which are a BFG MT rip off cause they are exactly the same pattern. The guy said they would be stuffed at 30k but for $390 for 4 new tyres I thought it was still very cheap. Anyway its 30k now, they have 25% tread left so they do wear faster than quality brand MT's but I dont have a lot to complain about becuase of the cheap tag. One positive thing about these tyres is that they have a very soft compound so grip is excellent and they dont chip or break, I have never had one part of the rubber chip on rocks. I would not use these tyres on a heavy powerful 4x4.

Dont want to start a tyre war but the Opats were the worst tyre i ever had with lug chipping, torn sidewalls and only one trip where i didnt score a flat. i tossed them with around 5000k on them and eventually sold all 4 for 100 bucks which i thought i did really
well out of

G'Day Davoe,
Not having a go at you mate, but from reading your posts etc over the years you sound like you're BLOODY hard on your tyres! (lucky b@stard!) ;-) More so than the vast majority of us anyway! Good feedback but!
Cheers

Gday Davoe,,funny you say that the OPAT's are not a good tyre. We are on our second set now, with nearly 85k out of the first set, and currently around 20k on the second set. They are fitted to a patrol wagon that is used quite often offroad. Everything from rock to gravel, sand, mud(not to good in the real gloopy stuff), and have never had a problem chipping. Bitumen handling is more than adequate considering that they are on a 4b and not a bmw.
You may have just had a real crappy batch, but so far, i have not had a problem.

I have Bridgie Dueller AT 693 Aussie made and they have done 50k and have at least another 30k in them. They have been to Innaminka, Simpson and around Melb with no flats. I will get them again. Apparantly they are Jap made as
well and these are not as good.

I normally check out the tyre
places and wreckers for Dunlop Road Grippers. Many take these off new cars when they want to put fancy mag
wheels on their cars. On average I get thim for about $160-180 per tyre for 7.50x16.
They may not be 'Coopers' or 'BFG's' but they do me just fine. I find they have good puncture resistance, excellent grip in various terrain, but they wear quicker than my previous BFG's. Usually had it by about 50k. Though I still recon they're value for money compare to the others and they can be found just about anywhere in the outback.
Cheers,
Mark

I've had these come with a couple of vehicles I've bought. Good off road but IMO very poor on the tar - like skates in the wet and noisy to boot.
Cheers ......... Alan

I had a great run with Hankookies on my old Hilux. Have now got Bridgestone 394s or something ATs and would not reccommend...good on the road but pretty ord offroad and they seem to be a soft compund.

Must agree with those suggesting the Firestone Firehawk RMT. Excellent wear,
quiet on the blackstuff &good value for your buck. I pay around $170 for 31.5 by 10,on 8 by 15 inch rims. Cheaper for smaller sizes.

Tried the firestones, OK for the price, but got a bit slippery on bitumen on low tread.
No one has mentioned Simex yet.
Highway pattern in the roadtrekker or the 300 AT.
Got some 235/85 16 roadtrekkers for $149.00 and good for a town and highway set.

Why not pay more and get something that will last instead of tryin to save $50 now...? Go for something quality that will last longer like a BFG AT, or Cooper ST, both good ATs.. Saving a few coin now may cost in the long run
Also depends on what models/pattern of the brands of tires you are mentioning.. There are many models of B'stones, and Kumhos etc and differing opinions of AT's from dealer to dealer.
I had the Kumho Adventurer AT on
mine when I bought it. they were like concrete, would last 239023049820398230948230498klms, but werent all bad offroad as long as it was dirt or sand. Mud forget it.

Bridgestones at $180 each.
I would guess these would be
the Desert Duelers. Very good tyre, but not available in all tyre sizes. Check with the dealer if they have a size to suit the Hilux rims.
