Hi all,
my family and I, consisting of my wife, daughter 6, and son 3, are looking to go camping for a long weekend very soon. Bought a campertrailer at start of year and loved it. Mainly did caravan parks. Over winter layed off a little and got some work done around house. Now i am getting itchy feet again and am keen to get out in the great outdoors again, although I am keen to get away from the caravan parks. We have 12v fridge, water tank and around 350 amp hours in battery capacity, so i would love to get out and be a little self sufficient.
We have a couple of camping books which are full of great camp spots, but make it very hard to choose one.
I was just wondering if anyone had any good suggestions on places to go. We live in brisbane, and for a long weekend i would travel 3 hoursmax.
Any ideas would be appreciated

I'm in Vic but remember camping and 4bying around Mt Mee when I was up there... Was nice then(some 13 years ago), I'm sure someone else will chime in and either thumb up or down my suggestion or know heaps better places...

Great spot is take the Lyons Road out from Beaudesert to the Border Rangers and set up camp the trees and birds. Toilets only. Take your own water. Great walk from the camp ground as well as a great drive over the Tweed Scenic Rim with places along the way for walks and lookouts back towards the ocean and Mt Warning.
Another alternative is beach - Moreton Island- only 1hr and a bit on barge but costly with camper but magic place.
Noosa North Shore - Cooloola but could be crowded.

Booloumba Creek is one of my favourites close to Brissy. Camp area 3 is the best it has tent sites next to the creek in amongst rainforest. However with a camp trailer you can camp in area 4 which has a big open grassy area, which is good for the kids. There's firewood and good amenities, but if want shower you have to go to camp site 1.

Charlie Moreland and Borumba Dam are nearby camp sites as well to consider. It's certainly a nice area up around Kenilworth

If you have a 4wd then Rainbow Beach / Cooloola is a great spot.

Hi Freezer - we are also in Brisbane, and prefer the peace of bush camping to van parks.
A shower/toilet for the laidies makes them much keener to camp, and the popup style change shelter is perfect for that. 12V Shower costs $20 from camping stores; Toilet is Port-a-loo or similar.

OK -some spots :
1. Gordons Country at Goomburra. Up Cunninghams gap; go to Driver Reviver (at Gladfield I think) and turn Right; aprox 10 klms to crossroads; Turn Right and follow the signs aprox 25 klms. There are several camping facilities in this little valley. Gordons Country is several hundred acres on the creek - camp anywhere. You can also camp in the National Park where the road ends.

2. Darlington Park - Drive to Beaudesert. At lights, go straight ahead to Kerry aprox 15 Klms (which is only a hall plus 2 houses); road bends left then over Albert river then right; Camp grounds is aprox 11 klms from Kerry. Large grassy area on Albert River, large oval, play area for small children, BBQ, ranger on site, new toilets. $5 per night per adult. In the same area is the Christmas Creek camp site (near the Stinson plane crash site).

3. One of the BEST camp grounds we have been to is Clarence River Wilderness. This site www.clarenceriver.com
A little further than the local sites but more than worth the extra drive.

4. As above - Charlie Morland campground at Kenilworth is brilliant, as is the nearby Peach Trees forestry Camp (the 2 are connected by Sunday Creek Road).

5. Paradise Valley is very nice campgound just over the border on the Lyons Road . From Rathdowney, follow the signs to the Lyons Road - then through Glennap, past the Border Tunnel (on the Qld/NSW border - and worth a stop); www.otp.com.au/paradisevalley

6. If you are into Barra fishing, check out Lake Monduran. Nice camp grounds, plus lake, plus fish : www.lakem.com.au

Then there is Wavehill Station on the Clarance River; NCBR (Neurum Creek Bush Retreat near Woodford/Cabooture); Double Island Point (go before they restrict beach camping to only a few spots); Inskip Point; Heifer Creek on Silky Oak Creek (near Ma Ma Creek Gatton);
The campertrailer Forum also has an active Qld group who organise weekend camps - Site Link

Happy camping....................................Keith

Hi FREZZER, try
Site Link

Its just the other side of Cunninghams Gap and a beautiful park. Janowen Hills 4X4 park is just up the road for a bit of driving in your 4by but they only let in "buddies".... ie 2 cars minimum...

Cheers

Brian

Hi,

We are also in Brisbane and have a 7 year old son and 4 year old daughter and travl in a TD Prado towing a camper trailer. When we are in need for a quick weekend getaway a really close spot is Poverty Creek on Bribie Island. It is 4wd access only in the National Park on the passage side. There is a campertrailer section which is a huge flat grassed area with stands of trees throughout. It is set back about 100m from the water with a bit of bush in between so safe for the kids. Our kids absolutely love it there - plenty of space for them to ride their bikes, kick the ball and have a game a cricket as well as play in the water on high tide while you have a relaxing fish. You can also end up having the place to yourself occassionally.

It is also just a short drive across the island to main beach for a bit of beach driving.

You do need to book and obtain a permit for your vehicle. Bookings are through the national parks website.

Happy camping.

Tanya

Freezer,

Grab a copy od "Dirty Weekends in South East Queensland" and take your pick from about 30 places.

I personally like Goomburra State Forest on the top of Cunnungham Gap.

Girraween & Sundown NPs near Stanthorpe are worth the trip.

Freezer,

There is a few photo's and reports from a few gatherings we've had, up at Borumba Deer Park, in the "Members" drop down list at the top of the screen (4th icon from the top when you see the drop down list appear).

This is a nice spot but still with good ammenities for those that want it. Not far from Imbil. Good 4wding close by if you need it and some nice forestry drives as well.

Maybe "John's Landing" is up your alley as well. On the banks of the Nossa River, not far from Tewantin. This place has been a bit rowdy the last few times I have been but still a nice spot if you can get away from any unrulely mobs.

Cheers, Trevor.
