Phil, like you my 2001 ZD30 just kept getting better and better as I clocked up the
miles happily motoring along until...........
BANG! hole in piston no. 3 at 244,000klms. (Almost made the 250K you make reference to :) )
The total repair bill came in at $13620 whilst $6827 of this was directly attributed to the engine replacement and this was with some (not enough given the history of this type of failure) "good will" assistance from Nissan HO.
I have my
old engine here and despite the nice hole in piston 3, every other piston is cracked in at least 2
places, the head has 8, yes 8 cracks in it.
Despite having every single service and only every being run on name brand diesel it would appear that the days of a
well maintained diesel motor being good for 500,000klms are
well and truly gone if it's a Nissan ZD30 engine you're relying on.
Whilst I don't wish my recent experiences upon anyone, I think it's crucial that Nissan in Australia take ownership of this problem and introduce a standard replacement engine policy - AT NO COST to ALL ZD30 owners regardless of the warranty situation.
In my case, having to cough up almost $14K to keep my Patrol on the road after only 5 years (with perfect maintenance) is quite pathetic really.
The more Nissan continue to try and sweep this problem under the carpet the more damage the Nissan reputation in this country suffers! According to their marketing material, they "pride themselves on their tough 4WD heritage"?
I don't think so!
Cheers
Brad
