Hi,
Can anyone tell me if they have had problems with piston frying in their patrols also any other info on 2000 ZD30 engine that they have had. I am having problems at the moment and have a variety of options thrown at me from mechanics and nissan dealers etc and jsut don't know which way to go.
We bought the viechle just over 3 months ago and have had nothing but trouble. Nissan have done a check on the engine no: and tell me that it is the original engine. It has about 157000kms on it.
Thank you

"Search" is your friend here emackj... There's probably a good days reading related to the ZD30 engine failures and what, if any support Nissan is likely to offer.

Hi, Ring Nissan COSTOMER RELATIONS in Melbourne and talk to " Val Davis" Let her know you know about the trouble with the 3lt engines and how they fry pistons, insist you want something done about it as they are still paying for some of the problem engines depending on how much stink the owner puts them through, your local dealer and Nissan Melbourne will try to put you off but don't take there crap, it is a well known fact that these engines are a problem but you only ever find out after you buy one. Do a search of this forum and you will find pages of information about blown ZD 30's and mongrel dealers. When you get it fixed blank off the EGR valve as this has a bit to do with the blow ups, and also check that your vehicle went through the recall to increase oil capacity.

Cheers and good luck.

The checks that I have done with the original nissan dealer that sold this vehicle to the first owner has looked up the engine number and has told me that there has been no major problems and it has had no upgrades of any kind but I will certainly call nissan melbourne and hopefully I will get somewhere. Thank you

It was bought from a dealer it has run out of warranty. The dealer it was bought from is not a nissan dealer.

Hi there emackj, I would be checking to see if the recall was done on it in regards to the increased oil capacity. If not you may have a leg to stand on, I am surprised that it doesnt have a 3 month warranty period after your purchase. Is the patrol classed as passenger or commercial. I know here in Sydney (NSW) they must have by law a 3 month warranty on any used vehicle providing it is under 10 years old and has done less then 160,000klms but this is on passenger vehicles not on commercial, hence thats why I ask what they class the patrol as ????. I hope you sort it out and they come to the party cause 20k is gunna hurt for a full rebuild. Regards Steve M

Hi Emackj

Sorry to hear about your Patrol. I have an 2001 ZD30 with 128,000kms trouble free. It only gets better as it gets older, however, ask me again when I have clocked up over 250,000kms (am I dreaming?)

From what I hear, you have to annoy the living daylights out of Nissan and try to find a sympathetic and cooperative Nissan Dealer who will support you. Nissan are well aware of the ZD30 problems and I understand they recalled ZD30s in Europe and the UK but not in good old Oz. Maybe we Aussies are all to easy going.

Good luck and keep us all posted so that we know what to do if we end up in the same situation.

Regards
Phil

Hi Phil,
I will definitely keep everyone posted. I am about to go into battle this morning with Nissan. Have been keeping an eye on this site and other 4x4 sites with forums. Really feel like I should have definitely researched this vehicle more before buying. I have read so much over the weekend I just hope that this will be the last problem for us for a while, As we have already had the fuel injector pump & Water pump replaced (under warranty thank goodness). It seems like I have definitely made the wrong decision when going into debt $30,000 I think if I had of kept my toy 4x4 I may have a drivable car still.
Thanks all
Cheers

Phil, like you my 2001 ZD30 just kept getting better and better as I clocked up the miles happily motoring along until...........

BANG! hole in piston no. 3 at 244,000klms. (Almost made the 250K you make reference to :) )

The total repair bill came in at $13620 whilst $6827 of this was directly attributed to the engine replacement and this was with some (not enough given the history of this type of failure) "good will" assistance from Nissan HO.

I have my old engine here and despite the nice hole in piston 3, every other piston is cracked in at least 2 places, the head has 8, yes 8 cracks in it.

Despite having every single service and only every being run on name brand diesel it would appear that the days of a well maintained diesel motor being good for 500,000klms are well and truly gone if it's a Nissan ZD30 engine you're relying on.

Whilst I don't wish my recent experiences upon anyone, I think it's crucial that Nissan in Australia take ownership of this problem and introduce a standard replacement engine policy - AT NO COST to ALL ZD30 owners regardless of the warranty situation.

In my case, having to cough up almost $14K to keep my Patrol on the road after only 5 years (with perfect maintenance) is quite pathetic really.

The more Nissan continue to try and sweep this problem under the carpet the more damage the Nissan reputation in this country suffers! According to their marketing material, they "pride themselves on their tough 4WD heritage"?

I don't think so!

Cheers
Brad

Gday all, I am a month into my saga with the 2002 3L GU 130000km, getting rebuilt in Vic, at first Nissan were to pay half labour , half parts and we fork out the other half. After a letter to customer relations in Melb, they have loosened the purse strings and are willing to accept some liability - by reducing the overall costs. So after a new block (current model block), pistons, rings, checking the crankshaft, and head, new pipes, belts, oils etc, we have practically a new angine which will probably do another 100000km or so. So we are keeping it as the trade in for a 4.2 will probably exceed 15k - and at that we can put a chev in it, and keep all our accessories. Good luck anyway. More pressure and hopefully they will recall the lot and replace with 4.2 td.

Maybe we should all start rumors about a 3L GU recall anyway and see what happens.

Yeah sad news but unfortunately once again, 2000 wasn't a good year for the 3.0 Nissan, I really think Nissan should habe done more for the customers who have suffered.
