With speed limits changing so often it's really hard sometimes to work out what the speed limit is where you are right now.

Destinator Ver 3 was the first time I saw a solution that would continuously remind you of the current speed limit. But it wasn't too practical - everytime you went over 61km/hr it would harp away - there was no user programmability.

If you have a PDA and a GPS receiver already (and you live in Sydney) then there's another solution now for $120. Software that warns you if you're going over the speed limit (by a selectable amount). It also has all the usual Red Light Cams, Speed cams, School Zones AND school times.

I'll be interested to hear from anyone who tries it, how error-free the speed zone details are.

Very interesting.

As "The Authorities" are supremely interested in encouraging us to observe speed limits in order to reduce motor vehicle injuries I have no doubt they will encourage the use of this device and actively assist the manufacturers in keeping it's data up to date - indeed I would not be surprised if they even provide a subsidy towards it's purchase.

On the other hand...?

Yeah only if it supplies them with real-time or logged data so they can fine you without even having to leave the cop shop. Oh oh....

Yep (speed alert ) have one in our commodore since new and I reckon I used it for about an hour, since then has never been turned on, with all the different speed limits around they are pretty well useless, you would spend more time with your eyes on the computer setting the different speed limits all the time then actually watching where your going.I use the cruise control 99% of the time, but yes would be good if this new device worked correctly and was updated all the time that way you would spend more time concetrating on the road ahead instead of looking down at the speedo all the time wondering what speed limit area you are in and running the risk of having your picture taken. My Camry has one as well, but it has 3 presets, i have the mset at 65 85 105 respectively, I cycle between them generally when i am not feeling alert or if i am in a known speed camera area, but 99.5% of the time i leave it on 105 as i am normally driving along a freeway.

I love my speed alert and Hope like hell the rav4 i pickup next week to replace the camry has one...

Hi there srowlandson, that would be a better idea if you could have 3 presets for the main speed limits like your camry has would be heaps better ours only goes up in increments of 5 k so for eg if you had it set for say 65 k you would then have to hold the button in till it counts its way up in 5 k increments to say 80k pain in the backside, so you can probably see why we dont use it. Doug - how many of these give you a continuous indication of speed limit changes (they all give speed camera, redlight, schoolzones etc)

Mike
I don't think any has been made that have all the speed zone changes ,that would be a mammoth task to research ,I think your going to have to rely on your eyes for that one,

I remember many years when I was a kid, :-) they used to have painted numbers on the road, which was a fantastic idea. What I find is when travelling long distances is there are too many signs on the side of the road, Occasionally you will miss one or 3 . Not to mention the signs that are obstructed by trees, branches or been knocked down. at least with painting a number in front you can easily see it.

For $120 you get the software which runs on a PDA, that needs to have a GPS built-in or be connected to one.
