Sorry , I saw it , but I did not tape it . I thought it was good balanced coverage of the growing problem of coastal land management .

I am sure that the people that use those areas now , would be upset about losing access , but their grandchildren will thank the authorities for saving it for them .

I am sure I am going to cop some flak for saying this .

Willie .

I agree with you Willie, it was a well balanced look at the problems facing this pristine area. I'm on a couple of caravan forums and to some of the posters there it's as though the sky is falling in.
So long as affordable sites are available for the general public (not just $400 per night tents, YIKES !!!!)
As Tim Winton said there are compromises that need to made by both sides for the good of everybody.
Regards Andrew.

Didn't look like it need much saving from what I could see. The current users look like they are doing a good job but of course there has to be someone who wants to save it for the future. If that future involves high cost [$400 per night] "wilderness experience" operations then not to many of our kids will be in a position to enjoy it in future. Along the way we will also have lost the simple, highly self sufficient holiday experience so many of us love.
I realise costs are high for up market accomodation in these remote areas but when you start charging the big bucks it will only be rich tourists than can get to enjoy it. Their ability to pay will soon push it beyond the reach of 'ordinary' Aussies and end up like Fraser, full of irresponsible ratbags that are a blight on the landscape who think because they are paying out big bucks they can do anything they like.
You can only wonder where ordinary Aussies will be able to go soon with so much of the country being "saved for our children & grandchildren" or priced out of our reach by the quest for overseas tourist dollars.

No flak from me Willie. I didn't watch 4 corners, so i may be off the mark, but below is my opinion.

Years ago, when wanting to easily get to the coast anywhere south of Geraldton, it was just a mass of shanty towns, real tin hut stuff. Gradually shires closed these down. Some people used to live in these squats full time, others just used them for holidays. I did not have much sympathy for them having to move these eyesores and rent free beach side homes and holiday homes.

I think Monkey Mia is one place spoiled by over exploitation. When we there a few years ago, although most people stayed at Denham and drove the short distance to enjoy the dolphins, they were already having problems with sewerage from the facilities at Monkey Mia, then they built more accommodation there which i felt totally ruined it for everyone. Visitors recently have told me they see more dolphins at Bunbury dolphin discovery centre than at Monkey Mia.

Further north, the Ningaloo Marine Park contains part of the largest fringing reef in Australia and is of global significance. Although it is a beautiful coast to camp along at present, it could easily be ruined by over population. I as a traveller want to enjoy it, but more than than, want to preserve it. The Queensland coast is intense tourism - let us preserve WA for it's beauty and all it has to offer for future generations as well as ourselves. Last time we drove into the previously beautiful Coral Bay, we drove straight out again. I'd hate to see the rest of the Ningaloo coast look like that.

Willie , banning access to save for the future grandkids ect just does NOT work ,once its banned/closed it stays that way and/or becomes an exclusive area for the very very rich ,, case in point the demise of coastal c/van parks.

A very interesting program. It was repeated here late last night, it may be repeated at different times in other states. Check the TV program. Having not been to WA yet, i can sympathise with the campers but can also see the need for management (as long as it's not a touristy place). I want to see it unspoilt but still reasonably accessible when i go there next year.

The following exchange was probably the most telling and there's a ring of truth in it :

"The view from on high does see it differently. The government points out that more people, more vehicles, more tracks means not just more erosion.

JENNIE CARY, WA DEPT OF CONSERVATION: We have had a dysentery outbreak in the southern end of this coastal strip in the past, and it is an issue that needs to be addressed.

ALANNAH MCTIERNAN, WA PLANNING MINISTER: Just part of the problem that everyone thinks it's not them, it's everyone else, where in reality it's not the individual, any individual that's the problem, it's just really the numbers, the sheer numbers of people.

CHRIS MASTERS: On either side, the problem is the same - how to manage numbers, and who to keep out. Even the inexpensive camps can become exclusive to those in the know. "

On ABC talkback radio the plight of the WA Tourism industry was being disscussed. The numbers are dropping alarmingly from both overseas and the domestic markets.

I have a view that many won't like but it's my opnion anyway. For the record I often work with overseas and interstate guests showing them around the state so I get to hear an outsiders point of view. Promoting WA is part of my job, but hopefully nobody here actually knows who I am so I can hide behind my forum name and not bite the hand that feeds me. I do feel very strongly about this however, so that's why I'm writing it.

The one thing WA HAD going for it was a sense of adventure. Big open spaces, deserts, wild coastlines etc. It is now simply grossly overmanaged and boring. I'm sick to the back teeth of 'eco' this and 'ecology' that. 'Eco' is simply another word for 'you can't do anything interesting here whatsoever'. You can't camp, 4x4, fish, shoot, light campfires, walk off path ways.......nothing. It is DULL. No worse, it's almost Orwellian in the 'big brother' vibe here now.

You drive for 9 hours and when you eventually get there you pay $5 to walk through an 'eco discovery centre' to hear some interminable hand wringing crap waffled on by a first year graduate about environmental and indigenous concerns with a line of other folks and then afterwards pay way too much for some crappy third rate accomodation. I can feel the disapointment from overseas visitors when they find out WA is not a wild place full of adventure, it the most regulated and nauseatingly overgoverned PC stronghold they can imagine. Sad but true.

Yeah yeah yeah I know it's all about the blah blah blah......Right / wrong who cares. It's simply too 'safe' now. I'm not advocating environmental vandalism, but people do need to do SOMETHING. Even remote roads are now labelled as some cheesy renamed tourist route. When the tourist bureau has pamphlets on the brothels and illegal gambling dens you know a town has sold it's soul to tourism.

It's just so............contrived and twee.

'Eco discovery environmental heritage trail'.......they can stick it up their collective shiny arses. Give me good trip to a privately run station anyday.

Were's my time machine? I need it badly.

V8, hear you there. Tourism world wide is becoming 'canned'. I suppose it comes down to the fact that as soon as someone can make a $ out of it - they'll try to lock it up.

'Canned' is the right description. Pre-packaged, hermatically sealed for your protection tourism.

You know what it is......I feel like a victim when I go to these places. A victim. I have this uneasy feeling I'm being manipulated. I'm being told what to look at and having anything nasty or dangerous hidden away from view.

Every year older I get it seems someone else is taking it upon themselves to tell me where to walk, where to drive, what to eat, what not to eat, what to say, what not to say...........urrrrrgh

I've got a real problem with smarmy self-righteous prats - that's what's really behind this. They're everywhere you look these days. Can't escape.

they will stop cars at the gate and take poles and ropes off you... Now what the bleep will hold up anyones tent?

I havent been in 15odd yrs, but yea, good old someone else looking after me, i cant do it on my own
