I HAVE JUST HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE TURBO ON MY NISSAN NAVARA STR, 2002 MODEL, HAVE DONE ONLY 60,000KLMS AND WAS LEAKING OIL FROM THE TURBO SEALS. THEY COULD NOT BE REPLACED AND A COMPLETE NEW UNIT HAD TO BE PURCHASED AT A COST OF $2,500.00 FITTED. ANY FEED BACK I CAN RECEIVE MAY HELP IN MY DISCUSSIONS WITH NISSAN TO GAIN SOME FORM OF COMPENSATION FOR THIS PROBLEM. IT APPEARS IT MAY NOT BE UNIQUE IN THIS MODEL. REGARDS, LASUE

That’s sounds a bit odd how they couldn’t replace a seal or seals, I am no Turbo buff but one would hope a seal that is a N/R item would last a F**k load longer than 60,000K.

I would of thought that they could replace any seal on the turbo, as the seal would need to be installed when being assembled so it would just be a matter of disassembling it.

Cheers

I got some flac a few weeks back because the new Nissan's are overheating the turbo's when towing heavy loads.

To get so much power from a 2.5 there has to be some give !

its funny that because, i do recall that jeep, land rover, Hyundai's nd a few others run small diesels that are of simiar size but don't seem to have those problems?

has nissan ever made a decent diesel engine besides the 4.2 td

Hi Derek,

I am not slinging flac but I think you will find Lance is talking about his 2002 3lt. I actually agree and have heard similar comments about the 2.5's so your comments are still valid info to prospective Navara D40 buyers IMO. My comments however are just hearsay until I see these probs in the flesh.

Cheers Trevor.

I have a Terrano and had problems with it that caused me to make enquiries regarding overhauling the turbo due to shaft end play (turned out to be within limits, just the mechanic at the dealer hadn’t much experience with turbos).
Anyway, the dealer had no listing for parts for the turbo and the workshop manual states that any turbo wear/leaks/failure is to be repaired by replacement of the turbo assembly. The whole lot.

I rang a Garret agent (manufactures of the turbo) and they said that they can get parts to service and overhaul, so I would guess that the dealer was just working from the manual. Easier to get one off the shelf than wait for a week or two to get one overhauled.

Thanks for your input Donks 1. My Nissan is a 3lt and I am looking forward to your reply after Monday's investigation. I know of two other 3lt Navara owners who had the same problem. Thanks to those who also replied.

sorry guys

just been checking out the parts cat. and there is no replacement items listed for any nissan turbo.. surely a reputable turbo repairer could source parts to suite it though..
in saying this i've got no record of a turbo failing on the navara.

Hi Lance M
I had a drama with a customers one last week.
Bolts coming loose and making a noise.
I got a quote from my Nissan dealer and the dollar figure was 1480.00 to the customer.
Obviously there is fitting costs but 2.5 hours will cover it and still have time for a coffee. I managed to rectify this problem by screwing the missing bolts back in but after hearing how expensive the Patrol turbos are I made sure I was sitting down when they quoted me.
Before I spoke with Nissan I rang MTQ here in Sydney and they said they do overhaul the Navara turbo. No quote as it is a bit hard to quote over the phone until you can see what you are dealing with.
Hope this helps

Where abouts in Syd are you? If I ever need to drop the oil from my rig while in Syd I would like to drop you a line and see if you could fit me in.

Regards, Trevor.

My 2004 Navara leaks oil externally from the turbo, done 105000km. Checked another 3 and they all have the same fault, one of them had only done 17000km. I spoke to a mate that works at the local dealership and asked him what the go was with fixing it and he just told me to clean it down!

Is it from the turbo or from the crank case breather hose? The turbo will suck some oil through the breather and it will be pushed out past the connections to the intercooler down stream. Mine was doing it at 30,000km and is still doing it at 255 000. Hasn't got any worse though.

Sorry for not replying earlier. The leak was coming out of the bottom of the turbo on the intake side. I say was, because it let out a pop and lost boost last weekend! luckily it was just up the road from the Nissan dealer that I bought it from and they repaired it the same day. Excessive play in the bearings they told me, and I have no reason to doubt them as the service manager is a close friend. It was rebuilt not replaced.
