Done a bit of reading about 12volt compressors and now in the market for one, what im looking for is who has had a good one what sort of flow rate and how long and often you would use it. Example you might have a compressor and only use it once a year. In other words who’s got one you flog and would you recommend it. Stand alone in a bag any help would be appreciated because I would prefer not to buy a piece of crap Dags

In 12 volt compressors I'm yet to find any that will pump as
well as the 'Big Thumper'. It's a Chinese build but seems to have the quality & now it's been fitted for 1 & 1/2 years of regular use is reliable so far too. Last trip to the high country we pumped 12 tyres up (it's continuously rated) in the time an ARB did his 4 & I suppose that will always be a problem for anyone that has a 3.5 cfm compressor. You either wait for your mates to finish or end up pumping theirs up too ;-) Mines permanently mounted but some may have trouble fitting it under the bonnat as it is BIG. About $400 plus air fittings from ATS.
The best all round portable compressor is the Maxair. Reasonable quality, has a hose, gauge & air fittings included in a handy padded bag. With a long warrenty & at $300 to $400 they are good value for someone that only wants to pump up their own tyres. Not particually suitable for permanately mounting under the bonnat.
Cheers Craig.........

I purchased one of these from the same seller a coupla yrs ago when he was sellin' 'em on ebay...
It has been used consistently during several trips through the Central & Western deserts and has performed faultlessly, and continues to do so....
Good value, IMO....

Looks very much like the Mega Grunt I bought a couple of months ago for $165- from my local Beaurepaires bloke.....in turn, that looks and measures almost identical to the MaxAir. Only difference is the air filter shape (internal foam bit).

I have an ARB and it does pretty
well. It keeps up with a Blue Tongue but I don't know how that compares to the others that have been mentioned.
What I will say is if you cna mount it in the car rather than under the bonnet.
Mine was initiially mounted under the bonnett and it overheated a few times and cut out. I believe this is because theunder bonnet temp is quite high on the turboed engines. I moved it under the passenger
seat and it runs great.
I also get the occasional 'fart joke' out of my kids or their friends

compared many and so for nothing has been as good as the maxair, even 4 compressors with twin pistons could not keep up

I've never understood the need for super fast compressors. I've got a Projecta Cyclone ($79 from Repco) which I've had for a while and it isn't fast but it almost keeps up with the likes of ARB. I've recently also picked up a Blue Tongue compressor. It's faster than the Projecta but not by a huge amount. The thing with the Blue Tongue is that it is continuously rated (inbuilt fan) so it can pump up
tyres all day without stopping. A Maxair might do a tyre two minutes faster than the Blue Tongue which just suggests that we are all really in too much of a hurry if the extra 8 minutes makes that much of a difference.

The need for super fast compressors has increased with the common fitment of oversized
tyres. Although your $79 job may be acceptable in reinflating a Suzuki tyre I'd hate to see it attempting a set of 35" Swampers. Some how I suspect it would take closer to 8 minutes extra per tyre...........that's over 1/2 an hour each & every time one needs to reinflate from 15 to 35 PSI. Of course the cheaper compressors that aren't continuously rated will also need to stop to cool down a couple of times as well.
When reseating a bead on a tubeless tyre it requires a large volume of air at preasure, something the cyclone will never be able to do. Also a compressor with 3 cfm or greater can run a blow gun efficiently to clean air filters, radiators, engine parts, chainsaws etc.

Dags,
Maxair, Blue Tongue,
Big Red....take your pick.
Me, I don't use it that often, but when I do, I want to be able to inflate a tyre from dead flat to my preferred pressure in a reasonable time x 4, without the compressor overheating.
That it the difference in a so-so, compared to a good one and you have to expect to pay more for it.
My compressor also has the ability to travel from vehicle to vehicle because it's contained in its own carry case with a switch on it.
Have I given the brand name away yet?
