Hi guys I was just wondering is there anything wrong with buying a new van in Victoria and what are the pros and cons as I can get a better deal there and am happy to drive down to pick it up when its ready Im worried about it being Vic rego and will I be in strife when I get it home ?? any comments would be appreciated and I remember that there was a
forum for this sort of thing but I don't know how to find it ??
Regards JB.

Johnny,
You don't have to get it registered in VIC to bring it home. Just ring the NSW RTA when you get a pickup date, and purchase a travel permit (can't think of what it's called). I did that when I bought my last bike in VIC. It cost me $17.00 or thereabouts and was valid for 3 days (you can vary the validity time, just ask 'em). They'll need a VIN.
When I got back, I just went and got a blue slip and registered it up here.
Don't forget your van insurance :-)

In Vicotria they are called an Unregistered Vhehicle Permit. Not sure what they are in NSW. But there is no reason why you can't register it in Victoria then re-register in NSW in 12 months.

Should not be a worry, as has been said you can get an RTA travel or relocation permit on supply of the vin & chassis no as
well as a few other details. I notice that APIA will also give you a covernote valid for 14 days to cover you for insurance which hopefully you would not need. The only problem is if you have a warranty claim as you do not want to have to travel back to Victoria if there are any problems. Maybe there is a deal you can work out with the supplier/manufacturer in this regard....I bought a new Galaxy branded as a Fulcher and had real probs with the retailer but Galaxy were absolutley fantastic when I told them what was going on and had my Van fixed @ my house rather than have to tow it back to
Melbourne for repair

Johny boy,
Only additional advice I can give is- allow yourself 2-3 days to pick van up and sort out any dealer related problems.

Recently we ordered a Supreme territory in WA and saved at least 5K on stamp duty and dealer delivery by picking it up in
Melbourne to start our East Coast Winter holiday. Rego'd in Vic but needed a garaging address in Victoria which was no problem as Family live in Vic. Carted all our gear over in a box trailer and sold the trailer for the same price as purchase.

Hi Yakodi you have done exactly what I was wondering is ok , so did you have to just give them an address or did you have to put the van in your relies name as I don't think they would mind but I just don't want to push the relationship if you know what I mean and do you live in SYD as I do and have you re registered it in SYD yet because I thought they would just hit you with all the savings later ??
oh did you have any dramas when picking up the van ?

We live near
Sydney, we travelled to Victoria, purchased a van on the same day, dealership registered it as Victoria 2years ago.
Last registration was Victoria & paid for over the internet.Registration papers are sent to you prior.
You do have a choice, whether N.S.W. or Vic, but if you want to register it in N.S.W., you will be up for a lot of fees.
You can have it registered in your name but at a relative or friends address, & they can just sent it onto you when it is due.Cost was about $32 yearly.
Can't go wrong...............hope this helps

Hello Bill
Thank you for your reply as we are a little nervous about buying a new van from Vic and not seeing it until we pick it up , we are concerned about living hence garaging it in SYD yet having Vic rego and how Insurance will go as there is a saving to be made yet I don't want to do anything wrong , and do you have any advice as to who I should insure with ? I'm not sure if you mean that you bought a new van or bought it 2 yrs old as buying new is where all the stamp and taxes are involved , any thoughts ?? and thank you once again for your input.
Regards JB.

Hello there, yes, it was a brand new caravan,we were a little apprehensive also at first, but all us nomads seem to be doing it.We trusted the caravan dealer who advised us on what to do.
It is also garaged in N.S.W. insured by AAMI (cheapest one I know of )
When you talk to other travellers, they seem to do the same as us, so it must be right.
Anyway hope this helps & is correct. regards Bill

Johnny Boy,
I'm not trying to be the fun police or anything, but if you get sprung with interstate rego on your van when living in NSW for over (I think) 3 months, you'll cop a nasty fine.
I know several people that do it to save a few bucks. Fair enough, we all want to save a $, but one of my mates got caught with a WA registered car (he'd been living here in NSW for >4 years and registered it at his parent's address in
Perth). A few checks by the police on a routine traffic matter cost him a hefty fine :-o
I'm unsure of what the insurance implications are.
Good luck with whatever choice you make :-)
When I bought my last bike in VIC, doing the rego couldn't have been easier. One way or another, the govt is going to get their stamp duty out of you :-(
