another 1 for you all= turbo's

I have an 80 series with 1HZ engine that has done 298,000km with a Mike Vine Turbo fitted.
Neither motor nor turbo have ever been touched except for ususal servicing of injectors and pump etc...so I am happy with reliability.
Your fuel consumption will go up especially when towing but it is great to be able to overtake without stressing that you won't make it. Normal running around empty I get 13L/100km with roof rack, snorkel and other things that have affected aerodynamics. On highway towing it can go up to 18L/100km with 3000kg load on a big square tandem trailer. Before turbo was fitted it seemed to just get 11-12L/100km whatever I did.
Make sure your cooling system is 100% and consider taking extra measures such as larger capacity radiator etc. just in case.
My motor has only ever been hot once and that was 2 weeks ago when but it turned out to be the viscous fan hub working intermittently. Replaced with a new one and no problem since.
I would recommend capping the boost of your turbo at 8psi as I have heard reports of 1HZ's having problems from high boost pressures. That is also why I have not gone for the big 3" mandrel bent exhaust that everyone talks about as the exhaust itself acts a boost limiter preventing excessive boost pressures in some ways.
If i were to do it all again I would first consider the diesel/gas conversion now and see if the claimed power increase was sufficient for my needs.

I fitted a turbo to our 1HZ at 140000 kms and it was the best $3300 I have spent on the old girl. Makes a big difference, about 40% increase in both power and torque, but leave the exhaust standard and don't fit and intercooler. The engine bay is hot enough already. I had ours fitted by the well known diesel tuners down south of Sydney. We get about 12 - 13 l/100kms around town and about 15/100 fully loaded on a trip. It now just keeps pulling at about 2100 RPM when before it would just die off. Go for it, you won't regret it.

My cruiser was a bit older than yours and i got the boys from MTQ to fit my turbo, it made her go heaps better, then only thing i could suggest is that get your engine compression tested before hand. My engine only had about 100k on the clock but found that one of my cylinders was low. I ended up just rebuilding the engine so i new that everything was going to hold together. Personally i wont go back to a 4wd without a turbo.

This would be the best money you have ever spent on your truck.

I have a Safari, no particular reason, fuel consumption the same unless you flog it and vehicle had done 150K's when I fitted it. No dramas however make sure your cooling system is ok.

Have also fitted a snorkel and 1 a 3" exhaust, all of which helps the delivery and expulsion of air.
