Has anyone travelled east along the Burke Development Rd on the south side of the Mitchell River to Gamboola thence crossing the river and heading north to King Junction,Windmill Flat, Kimba, Killarney,New Dixie.
Any information re track conditions, creek crossings etc. would be most appreciated as my brother in law who is know in the area tells me he may not be able to cross the Mitchell at Dunbar due to shire works.Have travelled that way previously to New Dixie so a different route may be quite interesting

Thanks in anticipation
Richard

Hi Richard

Other good places to get info is the Police, local servo or Dunbar Station. There was a bloke in the local bakery who you could get good info from too, that's if he is still there mind you.

If the BDR has been well graded then it will quite good to drive on, in 2004 we easily did 80-100klms yet in 2002 it was slower going, having not been graded. Remember to watch for livestock, bulldust patches and deep wheel ruts. It was mainly gates in 2002 but in 2004 was mostly grids. Any gates in 2004 were along the side track that I have mentioned below.

If you travel east from Dunbar heading to Chillagoe you can take a track to the left that is in between Gamboola and Wrothem Park. If you decide to head up that track you can camp on the Mitchell River just before Mt Mulgrave Station. This track will take you through Mt Mulgrave Station, Palmer River Homestead, past Fairlight Homestead and it will bring you out almost opposite Fairview Homestead, just north of Laura on the PDR. This was a good track with it being roughish (not graded for about 20klms of it) north of the Palmer.

(Please check on this if you can before you go that way.........but usually you have to stop at the Palmer River Homestead and let them know that you are passing through. Last time I was up that way (2004) that's all they were still asking of people who were travelling through. We have stopped twice, once we saw the lady and the second time no one seemed to be around so we passed on through. If you need to camp on their land, we have met people who have done this, then you should see them before you set up or asap.)

Hope this helps you and happy travels.

Cya
