G'Day all,

I know the subject of synthetic rope has been done to death here, with plasma rope being bagged for its intolerance of heat etc.

However with regard to boat winches, which is a whole lot different operating scenario, are there any good synthetics around?

Bearing in mind, I dont winch over rocks, winch doesnt have brake so dont get hot, cept motor heat, which not on drum.

It doesnt run over any fairlead, just straight from drum to bow of boat.

Total load fully fuelled wouldnt exceed 700kg.

Any pointers on new products appreciated.

Ron

Hi Ron
Most fishos these days are using the seat belt like material, no nasty bits of wire sticking out like the old days

Cheers Pete

Ron

Like the man said get the seat belt material. I've been using it on my 15' runabout for 9 years. The rope wire is nasty to delicate hands and synthetics can deteriorate fairly rapidly.
Regards Bob

Ps get someone like a boat cover maker to sew it on for you

Hi Ron

Probably the simplest is to go to a Yacht/Ship Chandlery such as Whitworths etc and get some 'spectra' rope . Extremely strong, does not stretch and nor too expensive for the amount you will need. Does not need to be too thick either. 8mm should be ok and easy on the hands too.

I also use "spectra" to winch our 22' alloy boat up with no problems.

Agreed Handy

The seat belt webbing is difficult to lay flat as you wind in quickly and after a while, starts to curl. A pain in the proverbial.

OK thanks for replies, the webbing good I know, but prob not best on electric wider drum winch.

Looks like the spectra rope is the go, will check it out.

stedfast bros in sydney are one of the marine winch rope suppliers
Note with the seat belt webbing type it should be used with a winch that is suitable to take webbing or you will find the teeth of the winch eat in to it
(it normally has a extra side to the drum covering the teeth)
