I do know it
well.
I'm imagining that you are entering from the Woodgate end rather than the
Coonarr Beach end.
If that's correct you just keep following the
Bundaberg or Beach signs until it's obvious that you are nearly at
the beach, then go straight on and you are at the Southern self registration point.
I'm not sure what you have been told about turning left and leaving the NP. If you turn right you will eventually reach One Mile
Creek (being that the
creek is one mile from Theodolite
Creek)
If you have entered the
park from the
Coonarr beach end then you will go past the sandmining area and then turn to the left across the front of it, this area is held in a mining lease but is not currently utilised, access to this area is illegal and there have been stories of people getting caught (guess that the neighbouring lease keeps their eye out) and of the lease owners being held liable if people trespass on their land (DMNR is a pretty tough customer when it comes to
recreation on land with mining leases)
You will discover a little village of beach
shacks in this area, it looks a little like Duelling Banjos territory but some of them have had a lot of money spent on them. According to NPs they are being tolerated until the active mining moves to that area, at which point they will be demolished.
The beach in front of these leases is under the control of the Burnett Shire Council. and while vehicles are allowed on
the beach between One mile
creek and
Coonarr Creek you are supposed to obtain a permit from Burnett Shire council, trouble is that they don't have any such permit available.
The beach between
Coonarr Creek and Elliot Heads South is closed to vehicles. (but there is a very, very overgrown and challenging track known as the
Coonarr Esplanade).
Even with all of the varying access rights,Kinkuna is such a fantastic, quiet and peaceful destination for the
well prepared and self sufficient traveller. I hope that you have a great time. There is still a huge area of NP that you can explore and much that you can do, oh and a good beach for swimming too...
cheers
