Awonga would be the go, just beware its a BIG dam so work the points early mornings and late afternoons. Just watch your weather don't get caught in the middle of the dam it can get rather dangerous.

Are you fishing with lures or bait? if with lures I'd be looking at say Sand Vipers, RMG, Reidy's, even the old spearhead for casting the points and treed areas. As for colour cannot help other than have a range but gold would need to be in there somewhere. Leading up to the full or new moon will also help :)

If memory serves me correct in a SE wind the place shuts down may as well put chair under tree drink beer read book:)

There is a lot more but brain is not working this morning. hope the above helps anyway.

Hmmmmmmmm need someone to carry the bags :) :)

Lake Proserpine, Peter Faust Dam at Proserpine is another famous Barra Dam. Camping is not allowed at the dam itself, though you can arrange to stay at Camp Kanga (an outdoor education Centre) just beneath the dam wall.

If you want good barra, you have to head north........>1.2m barra in our dams :-)

Check out Site Link for details of all the Qld dams.

I forgot to add...... you do know there is a Barra Closure Season from midday 1 November til midday 1 February? Bag limit of 1 barra except for upstream of Awoonga, Burdekin Falls, Callide, Eungella, Fairbairn, Fred Haigh
(Lake Monduran), Kinchant, Koombooloomba, Lenthalls, Peter Faust, Teemburra, Tinaroo and Wuruma dams. As such, i would check out these dams for good fishing ;-)

Just been looking at a fishing chat site. The Awoonga CP gets a real bagging. Double bookings, poor facilities, etc. Not sure if they are still an issue.

There is a free camp site further up the lake at Boyendale Bush Camp. Toilets only.

I have the Jan 06 Bush and Beach and there was a great writ up in that.

G'day Russ,

Planning on a trip myself, my dad is coming from Sydney for this. We are planning 2 weeks in November to travel to Cairns and hope to fish Moduran, Awoonga, Peter Faust and Tinaroo. My mum and bride are coming as well - so it won't be all fishing (sadly). From my limited time and enquiry these are the ones delivering some solid fish (the other dams do as well) and are along the main drag more or less.

Kind regards

Awonga. But make sure you book cause its pretty popular.
I think the park has new owners now so maybe the service has improved.

thanks for all the info and links, i am aware of the no keep policy and am delighted to be returning them all to the water to fight another day.....i never will understand the selfish materialistic attitude that prevents the return of such a magnificent animal to its home.... some people just cant put a fish back in the water...but to me, returning them is yet another buzz after the thrill of getting them into the net in the first place

I agree with you Russ, this way they'll be around a lot longer. Mind you a picture is not bad to take home if it is a good one. Sometimes the handling and relaese method needs a lot of consideration if you want the fish to survive.

Kind regards
