During our 6 week caravan trip in and around the Flinders Ranges begining later this week, we're planning on spending a week around the Blinman area and looking to set up camp for a week or so at either Alpana Stn or Angornichina Village to do the nearby 4x4 & PAR treks. Looking for comments on the powered sites at the camp grounds at these locations.

TIA

Although I have not expressly seen Alpana's site, I imagine (have done some of their tracks, camped in a paddock of theirs, & been to their house etc) it would be nicer than Angorichina Village.

That location (Angorichina) is set up as a tourist / caravan site , has on site accommodation as well, and is very bare. It is on a rocky (what ain't rocky in the Flinders??) hill side, but does have a quite reasonable store, does tyre repairs I believe, and has a booze licence. They also sell fuel. Blinman may be another fuel option.

Both are reasonably central - it would be 6 of one & half a dozen of the other as a base location.

Perhaps you could ask Alpana for a comment on their site compared to Angorichina?

Cheers

Hi

I"ve stayed at Angorachina, and probably wouldnt do so again and certainly not for a week, as an overnighter it's fine, you can camp behind the pub at Blinman, but have no idea what it's like, I've not been to Alpana Stn, but I think it'd probably be nicer than Angorachina.

cheers

(also posted on 4wd_out_of_adelaide)

Really depends on what you want.

Alpana Station (give John my regards) have fairly basic facilities for camping/vans but you would likely be the only ones there. There are minimal facilities - no shop etc. (this is the camp sites - including powered ones, near the main homestead. He is restoring the old homestead ("pug and pine") there, and has an interesting old Land Rover in the shed there ;-)

I believe John also has a bush camping site which he has set up further away from the homestead, but I don't recall what facilities there are there.

Angorichina on the other hand is a very capably managed camp-ground with a well stocked shop/bottle shop etc. about 20 minutes away from Alpana Station. At this time of year there would usually only be a few others, plus most nights there is one of the backpacker style tour groups there - Greedy-Grape Tours or whatever they are called. If you decide on Angorichina give David my regards too - great bloke.

Angorichina has lot of van sites - I'd guess fifty off, plus units/cabin etc.

Alpana Station has a number of 4x4 tracks on the station including his Mt Samuel tracks - including what he calls the Mt Buggery Gorge Challenge. You go over and along the ABC Range and the Heysen Range - nice mix of rugged hills and rocks, great views in most directions, particularly South and East. One of his station tracks comes into the back of Blinman Falls too - if you are blessed with rain, I am sure it
would be great place to be - although there was no water there a few weeks ago.

Reasonably adventurous, but nothing you couldn't do in anything with low range - but some different and interesting scenery. A couple of steep climbs. A few rocky gorges to travel through slowly. Some great lookouts and nice station tracks. On the Southern side he also has some nice springs which had quite a bit of nice water in them.

I hope that helps,
Andrew.

Hello Graham if you have a generator you could camp out in Parachilna Gorge for nothin and grab free fire wood {sleeper's} near Parachilna before heading into the gorge and there is some nice camp spots along the gorge far better then the Village.cheer's Sir GREENDOG

Thanks for the info Rick, Lyn, Andrew and Geendog, after info supplied here and elsewhere looks like we might spend a few days at each, even though they are close together, just for the experience of having stayed there etc... We found when we did the Gibb River Rd last year spending at least a night or 2 at each of the stations etc.. that had camping (some we stayed 5 nights at) was well worthwhile. All had or offered something that little bit different that added up to make a very enjoyable trip.

This 6 weeks in the Flinders area should also be very enjoyable by all accounts from the info we've been given etc...
