Seeing it’s so dry in the Victorian high country will the DSE/parks open the season road closures early. Don’t like our chances but this should be the case as they do close the roads early when winter starts early.

it wont happen.

I think it would be smart to leave the closed longer so tracks etc have a bit more chance to regenerate.

How does a track regenerate itself? Its more the other way around the longer its closed can caused more damage eg trees fall onto a track and when it rains causes the water running down a track to divert when it hits the tree and erodes the track. Seen this many times

How do things regenerate? They grow with sun and water and no cars driving over them. Thats one reason why they have seasonal closures in the first place.

No, its not more like the other way round. Trees fall down even when the tracks are open, and like when they are closed, most of the time people dont clear them.. they drive round them.

Tracks with things growing on them, oh forgot the last time I drove around a corner and a tree was growing in the middle of the road!

lol....

they are closed to stop them being chewed up when they get damp. Some tracks up high stay locked longer becasue there would still be snow on them (not this year) Haven't see Vic Range in Toolangi 'regenerating' lately :-O

that's not regeneration.....that's maintenance and that's what they should be doing on a regular basis so that they wouldn't have to close tracks!

Would seem fair wouldn't it, but basically no chance Hound.

Also with many tracks having no gates just signs now, it wouldn't
be practical.

However if you have a specific thing on you can get an OK from a local
manager sometimes to go early, done that.

I think I'd be more concerned with a reduced season based or summer closures
re fire risk.

Totally agree with Truckster. I would like to see MORE seasonal closures if it means we will still have tracks to drive for years to come. Just because we have had a fairly dry season so far, doesnt mean we wont get some good rain in the next month or so. Also this time of year usually brings the high winds which can cause extensive damage, especially in the high country, as per last year.

In regard to bulldozing of tracks in Toolangi, again I dont have an issue if it allows them to be used in future years. BTW, I'm sure some would have heard about the damage to the gates at Toolangi a few weeks ago. Some 'morons' decided to pull the gates out so they could drive Vic Range, Sams Hut & Blowhard. Hopefully they will be caught & hung up by their 'buster browns'.

Not that I get out much in the winter months, but when I do, (actually going for a drive to Walhalla on Sunday), I will be taking my camera & hopefully wont have to use it to take pics of 4wders driving closed tracks, because I will have no hesitation in doing so & sending to relevant authorities.

Cheers

no way it will happen if you've ever heard the DSE rhetoric.

How much of it is true I don't know, but it allegedly takes them a long time to check out the condition of all these tracks, clear away fallen timber, grade/bulldoze really nasty washaways, and repair safety signs.

In May a lot of the tracks were pretty cut up from Easter 4WDing, so they will always say they had a lot of work to do.

Oh well. When you get in there it is a pretty place.

Ciao for now
Andrew.
