Has anyone carefully looked at their receipt when purchasing petrol or diesel from Safeway Petrol outlets?

The advertised board price and what you actually pay is 0.9 cents a litre higher. The advertised board price is shown to two decimal places ie $1.18, however the price shown on the receipts is shown at 3 decimal places ie $1.189.

So even though the price of fuel is being advertised at $1.18, effectively you are paying $1.19. I know that it is only 1 cent and may not be considered a big deal, however when extrapilated over the may thousands of customers pruchasing fuel each day this would equate to a substantial sum of money.

Just another scam to con the motorist out of their hard earned $$.

Although in some instances they are a toothless tiger, this is exactly what the ACCC is for, so let them know about it.

I agree that is a problem but a bigger issue is if you are actually getting the correct amount of fuel.. Years ago there was a Federal Govt mob who used to go to all the servos, checking quantity and quality to make sure the govt were getting the correct tax and the customer, the correct quality and quantity, But i guess it was costing money and now is gone. Funny how we can find miles of money for people outside our borders but nothing for the taxpayers who keep the joint going !!! Michael

"weights and Measures" used to do, dont they still, but thats only quantities. I think it is up to the consumer to check that they are paying what is advertised.
I would be going straight back in there and demanding to see the manager.

BTW there isnt loads of money to keep people out of our borders! Those of us that work up in the northern waters can tell that it is still wide open up there!

I was able to fit 11.5 litres into one of those red 10 litre plastic jerry cans (to the 10L mark).
I just thought I packed it in there nice and tight and got away with an extra 1.5L...lol

Needless to say I have never been back to that servo.

I wouldnt go accusing anyone on the basis of a plastic jerry can.
Fill one up with water to the very top then push the sides in a tiny bit and see how much the volume changes. Goes the other way when they bulge a bit.

Yep Im with you on this one, it is illegal, if the advertised price is $1.18 that means it is $1.1800000.
Waste of time even contacting the Accc, another waste of space.

From Outerlimits..

"its usually advertised on the board as 129.9cents per ltr"

Which actually IS $1.299 as the docket says.

I actually think there are different boards with differnt ways of showign the price.
Correct?

Bugger......Yep you are right and my argument has been defunked. If the price on the board shows 118.9, then the docket is showing $1.189, they are the same. The decimal points are throwing me out. I was too quick to type.

you've lost me there? didnt you say
"The advertised board price is shown to two decimal places ie $1.18, however the price shown on the receipts is shown at 3 decimal places ie $1.189."

the board says $1.18 and you were charged 118.9 cents? you were ripped off then? No matter where you put the decimal point. Even if you hold it upside down and read it while scratching your ass it still says to me you were overcharged .9cents?

I think Truckster is right. But the original post gave a Victorian example, so things might be different way down there.

All advertisiing signs in my area (plus the rest of Qld, NT and WA I recently travelled through) use the format 118.9 to mean $1.189 (one dollar eighteen and nine tenths); effectively $1.19 (0ne 100th of a cent less, a difference of 1 cent per 100 litres of fuel).

Fortunately I escaped from Vic few years ago to return to Qld!! So not sure of the format used there.

There has been some recent discussion in the ACT of pricing fuel to the nearest 5 cents so that would eliminate the decimal points ie it would be $1.55/litre or $2.05, or maybe by Xmas unless the talk of making fuel prices an "election" issue gets some steam behind it $9.95/lt....

gee, thats a great idea, so petrol only goes up by 5cent increments?? Brilliant... :(

going up by .1cent would eliminate the need for decimal points... or .. just calling it $1.19....

They advertise 2 prices sometimes I believe, the discounted price with voucher and so called normal price. It all smells like frequent flyers to me, just another bull bleep promotional system that so many suckers fall for. And yes , the other issue is the amount of fuel you get, the servo's are not regulated often enough, and I have found discrepancies occassionally.

I have seen the same thing.009 third decimal place rip off in Sydney started double checking all by receptes more carefully and was surprised how many servos were at it. Sent details to ACCC and TV had no response form any one. To me it straight out false advertising resulting in theft. If I took .009 Lt more fuel and did not pay for it over 90lt Tank they would do me for stealing. Its millions $$ over the fuel turm over in a day.

A more important issue with Safeway is the way you can put 100litres of LPG into a 90Litre tank.

This is a regular occurrence in a friend's fourby. We have just been ot the Cape and back (so the tanks were filled many times!!), and he always runs the car out of gas before switching to petrol, so the tank is always empty for reference.

Most of the time, it takes about 92 or 93 litres before the backpressure shuts off the bowser, but at a certain Safeway outlet in Melbourne, it always takes over 100 litres.
