We are going over to tassie for a month with our Tvan and we are going to just go where ever the wind takes us.We will be going over in April 2007 and we were wondering if there are any "MUST SEE PLACES",our preferred options would be out of the way "secret" fly fishing spots....any information would be grateful.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE......MICK

We took our van to Tassie for 2 months early this year and only got to see the western side. Longford is a nice place and plenty of fishing. The caravan
park is right on the river.

We spent 7 glorious weeks caravanning and touring around Tassie earlier this year. Check out posts 35837 and 36802, in which i have had input together with others, rather than me repeating just my bit here.
I researched the trip thoroughly with lots of good suggestions from people here, on the caravanners
forum and on the Bushtracker
forum. I also read Michelle journal of their family trip to Tassie a year earlier. We didn't go fishing, but they say where there's running
water, there's trout. You must get a fishing licence though.
We followed the route plan recommended by a Tasmanian; seeing the North coast, then down the West coast, across the centre towards
Hobart, down to the southern tip, then up the East coast. Then down through historic Midlands, then back Northwards through the central mountains. They also say, if it's going to be a clear day, go to
Cradle Mountain from where ever you are - clear days up there are few, and so many people stayed up there at great expense (the dearest CP i have heard of), and still never got clear weather. Fabulous scenery all round, friendly people and so much to see and do.
Also my review of free campsites and CPs we stayed at is on the caravaners
forum, caravan
park forum section.
Have fun planning; you will have a fabulous trip. Can you extend the month to 6 weeks? Four weeks is not enough.

Thanks for your information, unfortunatly we only have 4 weeks to see as much as we can, and fit a fair amount of fishing in as
well, so it looks as if we may be streching it a bit....ah
well there is always next time...Thanks again....MICK

With the cost of getting over there (travel from WA as
well as ferry), we were determined to fit as much in as possible - we may never get back there again. For that reason, fishing didn't get a look in, and we allowed 6 weeks for touring, with a few spare days visiting friends, old and new, as
well as some sheep studs. Another couple had booked for 4 weeks, but once they got onto the island, changed their ferry booking to allow the 6 weeks. What a shame you can't take a bit longer. Looks like you will get a taste of what you can see, and may next time come up again soon.

Hi Tvanmick,
Biggest problem with Tassie is you drive yourself crazy tring to decide where tro fish next. If you have access to a boat t the lochstye fly fishing on Arthurs is fantastic. Penstock is Brilliant just on dusk the mudeye hatchs have to be seen to be believed. If you can walk for a couple of hours the cental highlands are brilliant. Contact
Ross at the Essential Angler in
Launceston and he will give you good advice on flies and what the fish are doing. Hoping to get down myself in feb. which is when the weather is most stable and also hugew hatchs of gumbettles. My email address is hanrahanfamily@dodo.com.au I will give you some more info if you email me
Cheers Pete

Had 7 weeks there last Autumn, but needed far more time. Lake St. Clair is truly beautiful, and OK for a fish. It's a fly/lure fishery only. We spent our last few days before returning home at
Sheffield, and fished the lakes and rivers in the area.
Lake Barrington had been stocked with Atlantic Salmon a month or so beforehand, and provided us with great sport. I've never seen fish leap so high out of the
water when hooked. They leave Barramundi for dead. Have a great trip.
