Good Morning Travellers, I am sure that a few of you out there have visited the
Tamworth Music Festival over the years and was wondering where there is a
good spot to
camp out there when the festival is on.
We have a camper trailer and two dogs travelling with us. I know that it might be a bit late to book anywhere but I am hoping that there might be something out there.
Thanks in anticipation
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,
There is general public
camping near the river across fron Bunnings Warehouse complex. They are currently building a levy bank along the section so the
camping area may be reduced. You can also
camp in the showgrounds but it is a bit of a walk into town. The
camping near the river is about a stone throw from town and a word of advice is not to
camp in the drains that they have constructed around the
camping areas as they are renound for getting unseasonal rain during the festival and as such the drains flood (funny that).
You can also
camp at the football ground diagonally across from the Bi Lo shopping centre. It is also a short walk from town but gets a bit crowded.
Make sure that you take portable seats and book early for any paid shows that you want to attend.
The Longyard Hotel has good entertainment throughout the festival and is a good venue to see free shows at.
If you are in to Rodeo. the ABCRA national finals are held at the
show grounds during the festival and are much sort after tickets so purchase them early and take a cushion to sit on as the seating is very uncomfortable.
If you want any more info check out the CMAA web site. or
Tamworth tourist info centre
Cheers Kev

thanks very much for that Kev, the
camping ground that you said that is near the river - does that get crowded? Would we need to get there a few days before the festival?
I was looking at the
Tamworth music festival website but it was very limited.
I will get onto the tickets for the Rodeo - that is one thing that I really love. Are there things that happen around the festival that don't require tickets?
Jen

The
camping ground near the river is pretty big I don't think that there will be a problem in
camping. I cant remember if there is Ammenities though I'll make a call to the rellies and find out for you. There is constant busking in the main street (Peel Street) and some shows at the TREC (
Tamworth Regional Entertainment Centre) The longyard is not very far from that. Most Pubs and Hotels have free shows that you can attend. The West
Tamworth Leagues Clubs has good shows outside that are free but most shows indoors are for a price.
I'm sure the
Tourist info centre should have a bit of an idea what is going on by now. They may even be able to send you a tourist map of
tamworth to have to let you work out distances from locations. As most of the time it's easier to walk than drive as
parking can be a real bitch.
Cheers Kev

Hi Jen,
Try the site listed below, it has a few shows listed during the festival already including the dates for the Rodeo.
www.visittamworth.com
It also has links to
camping areas that have not yet been booked out for paid sites. You may also be able to down load the city map so you could work out where the areas are.
Cheers Kev

Gidday Jen,
When we fly in and out of
Tamworth during the festival, I notice quite a few campers set up in an area on the side of the Gunnedah Rd just outside the airport (runs parallel to the main runway). I think it's a sanctioned area, as there's always been people there in the last 12 years I've been going there.

Yeah that's where the cheapskates like me stay as it is FREE. Was power on a power pole there till a few years ago as
well making those balmy Jan nights more comfy cause we used to turn on a small aircon ( I think I was being a bit cheeky doing this but anyway what's done is done !!).
The other spot I would say as being OK with pets is Austin Caravan
Park (on the Armidale rd, north side of
Tamworth) was nice last time we stayed there but that's a few years back now so things can change in that time.
Cheers Trevor.

Don't know about the
camping but a bit of advice for the rodeo apart from it being great, take a cushion to sit on as it goes for about 4 hours and you are sitting on wooden benches. We saw all these people walking along with pillows and
seat cushions and thought they were mad but 4 hours later I was envious. Have a great time
