WE ARE LOOKING AT GETTING SOME SORT OF SYSTEM TO ALLOW US TO GO
FREE CAMPING.
NOT SURE WHETHER TO GO SOLAR OR SOMETHING ELSE. THE REASON WE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT SOLAR IS WE WOULD BE LEAVING THE VAN SOMEWHERE AND GOING OFF FOR THE DAY TO EXPLORE AND WERE WORRIED WHEN WE GOT BACK THE SOLAR PANEL MIGHT HAVE BEEN STOLEN. SAD TO THINK LIKE THAT BUT IS A POSSIBLITY.
WE WOULD WANT TO RUN LIGHTS AND PUMP FOR SHOWER AND
TOILET. WE DO HAVE AIRCON AND TV BUT NOT SURE IF THERE IS ANYTHING THAT WOULD RUN ALL THAT.
CAN ANYONE SUGGEST A WAY TO GO

Ok, so what have you got a camper or a van?
In either case a solar panel free standing can be chained to the left vehicle and only the determined thief would take it.
Our solar P has been left many times chained like a dawg to the van on a suitable length and we have never had it touched. Some people have even offered to reface it when the sun moves off it.

OK, you can see
mine in the Pic and I chain the 64watt panel to the van and have had no trouble.
This allows for us to have tv/video each evening if desired and runs the van elec's. Viz lights and
water pump etc. however would definately not be able to run anything heavier. We use a gas heater for the cold and a 12v fan when it is hot.
We can last about 2 weeks without topping tanks or food up but the beer does'nt last that long. (bugger)
There is only 2 of us and we minimise the use of
water showering every 2nd day only and having an APC on the other days.

Why are you shouting?
Assuming you want 240V, then apart from the ac unit you could run the rest on a small inverter.
Im not sure what you mean by
free camping...........is it anything like free balling?

Mazdan, instead of asking a question which mim would obviously not know the answer to, why not just tell her ;-)
mim,
In forums (such as this one) the use of capital letters is interpreted as shouting. It might be a good idea to hit that 'Caps Lock' key ;-)
See, wasn't too hard was it Mazdan ;-)

Please turn your caps lock OFF
An inverter is an item that has the ability to change 12volt DC power into 240AC
In other words it runs off you truck battery.
I suggest you google for more info.
They come in various sizes and there are also different types depending on what your uses are.
A smart inverter user will work out what there max use is so they dont end up with a flat battery..........or alternately use a second battery.

Hello Mim
Please don't type in Upper Case as it is considered to be shouting on the internet and is very bad etiquette.
Buy yourself a Honda Generator 2.0 and you will be able to power all your needs.
Cheers

Mim,,, I have just purchased a 2000 Watt inverter from Repco $499.00 on special. Fitted it the other day and it will run everything in the van including a 60 Ltr 240 volt deep freeze. I have two 80 watt solar panels mounted on the roof charging two 130 amp hour batteries. Now this all sounds good but solar has its limitations, you need as much sun as you can get and a cloudy day is its worst enemy. Even on a clear day you only get full charge from about 10am -3pm and nothing at night. As Willem has suggested you will still need a genset as a backup at least, a genset is the only sure way if you plan to use TV etc for a long period without travelling to charge the batteries. Yes there are a lot of people who hate generators but I work on the principal. If I pull into a
camp and there are people already there and no generators are running I ask if they mind,if they do I move. If I am there first and other people arrive they live with it or they move on, I think that is fair. Regards Nav.

"you need as much sun as you can get and a cloudy day is its worst enemy. Even on a clear day you only get full charge from about 10am -3pm and nothing at night"
With a quality Solar Panel you will get some power from sun-up to sun-set to some degree, the power delivered at 7.30am will not be as high as 2pm but it's free and available, if your panel has the capacity to deliver the amps to the battery.
The high tech panels available today are more expensive than the old technology elcheapo panels available, but that's what you are paying for - solar panel performance.
With
inverters, you need to know what type or how "clean" the 240v power has to be, before you go and buy a budget priced inverter look at it's specs and compare the numbers to the requirements of the various items it has to power.

If you are going off for the day most days, you have the capacity to charge a battery.
Loks like the problem is that the battery is not going with you, so you need to charge the battery left in the van.
Why not have two battery packs, Derek at Sidewinder (ABR advert) on this
forum makes some for example, and swap them over every day or so.
If not you will have two fully charged batteries for a little while.

Mim, it depends where you want to go - if it is sunny, set up solar and you won't need a genny.
We had a portable solar panel and one deep cycle battery (ran the fridge and 2 lights, but wouldn't have been sufficient for
water pumps), and never gave theft a thought - just put it out to face the sun when we stopped. We left the genny at home. We had a wind-up caravan then, that with canvas was not burglar proof at all. Never gave security a thought. We generally either free camped right away from anyone, or in national
park type campsites, with an occasional visit to a caravan
park in a town.
Now we have a caravan set up with 4 roof mounted solar panels and 3 deep cycle batteries which give ample power for fridge, lights,
water pumps, shower etc. We have
inverters to run 240 volt things, such as electric shaver, phone and camera batteries, electric soldering iron, rechargeable batteries for electric drill etc. You'll need the Honda 20i genny if you want to run the air con in the caravan.
