Hello forumites

for sandgropers that may be interested, I drove past the rigging shed in Malaga and they had a sign out that read; "4WD Snatch Straps $30"

I dont know the brand, rating etc, but for anyone in the market, you could get yourself a bargain.

cheers

Mike

Hi Mike, have not seen then but sounds suspect to me. That is 1/2 price of the normal price for a 9 m strap. I always think you get what you pay for, at least in most cases

Yeh well it's always in the recovery box under the bed,I really don't think it is neccesary for me to have one when I have a winch and 2 lockers

I agree Doug..
If a winch with a 3 line pull cannot do it a snatch strap is probably
not doing it either... and the question is anyway .. do you carry one
for yourself or to help others .. for my new vehicle it is pretty useless to
carry a snatch strap cause it would take 2 toyos to pull anyway.
Usually it is recommended to replace it after 20 uses or so .. well I guess
if the snatch strap is used as it us supposed to be used it is useless after the
first use.. like seatbelts .. supposed to be replaced after one accident ..
question is who does it ... if a snatch strap is streched it becomes more like a standard rope .. so why not use the rope in the first place if you really need it
and if you use it and it does not get stretched to the limit you could have use
a rope in the first place ..
I drove Unimogs and big trucks off road during my service times (compulsory) a long time ago .. a chain was all we ever needed and our sand ladders but a truck had 5 people on board ... enough to have four carrying and laying the sand ladders in front of the wheels when necessary

gmd,

Cannot agree with you mate.

For the average 4WD'er a snatch strap is a relatively cheap safety item to be carried in the vehicle for use when necessary.

When stuck, you will be more likely to be given help by another driver/vehicle if you demonstrate you are kind of prepared. If another vehicle also has a winch, so much the better and the snatch strap would obviously not be required.

Oh, and a snatch strap lasts much longer than "one use". Provided it is kept clean and shows no signs of visible wear, it will be safe enough to get someone out of trouble.

Sand Man,

I follow you here but just for the sake of the argument ...
what I said is not to carry nothing ... I said a rope might do or a chain ..
I can do with a rope what I can do with a snatch strap (of course with
proper rating) thats what I was saying .. actually I said chain also but I
accept the argument that a high rated chain is bloody heavy ..

I personally can not see the advantage of a snatch strap over a good rope.
I carry a spare winch rope (synthetic) which is used as a towing rope if
required and also as a winch extension ..

Not rying to be hostile or trying to be smart .. just interested in a good reflection of the pros and cons ..

Fair enough gmd. I understand what you are saying.

But IMO the advantage of the snatch strap is in its elasticity. I don't mean a jerk, or heavy snatch either.

When used correctly, ie just a couple of metres of slack, a gentle take off and with the assistance of drive from the vehicle being extricated, the whole task is usually quick and quite easily achieved. I don't believe the same effect can be achieved with a rigid rope or chain. You are more likely to cause damage to one or the other vehicles because there is nothing to provide "give".

Well, that's my experience anyway.

Maybe I have been lucky. Maybe I have "backed off" rather than attempt a passage I have assessed "dodgy" and found another route, or have just turned around. In any case, I just cannot justify buying a winch for the type of off road travelling I do. There are too many other "toys" I prefer to spend my money on.

Each to their own eh!

Thats fair enough ..
With no winch its a cheap insurance ... no problem ..
I have a winch for beach launches of the boat ..
I have a heavy truck and I am dead scared to leave it stranded
in the water ... (done that before but was lucky enough to get
out in time)... so even with a towbar extension I may have to
go further than I like and so I secure the vehicle with the winch.
