Just travelled (21 Aug to 3 Sept) from
Perth to Uluru via Great Central Rd and road conditions were excellent but a bit dusty. The section of road between WA / NT Border from Docker River to Uluru is pretty rough though with bad corrugations. After Uluru we headed down the
Oodnadatta track to
Marree (road is mostly excellent - 90 kms/hour easy) then up the
Birdsville track for the races. Again, road was mostly excellent. After
Birdsville, we went to Innaminka via the
Birdsville Dev Rd and
Cordillo downs Rd which was mostly OK but at a slower pace. The worst bit of track was from Innaminka to
the Dig Tree - the road is a nightmare with large rocks and very rough. All in all, quite an easy drive and no mech problems or blow outs (love the Goodrich All Terrain T/A's !). We were in a Nissan Patrol ST Turbo-diesel Tray back with Supreme Sunray slide on camper which performed faultlessly.

When did you go to
the dig tree. We did it on 27/8 and didnt have a problem? Are you talking about the road out of
Innamincka to Burke & Wills bridge, or the short trip off that road into
the Dig Tree (about 14k's if memory serves me correctly)?
Even that wasn't too bad when we did it.

Tessa,
I was there on the 27th...... I left about 10 am if I remember rightly.
I didn't find the road bad at all. Although I came up from the
rig road and turned right to go to
the dig tree. I remember see road building machines there so they were working on it.

Hi Old Baz,
We camped out in one of the numerous gravel pits beside the Great Central Rd one night near Cosmo Newberry which was fine and the second night we camped at
the settlement near
Giles weather station which was excellent. It had good ablutions and a
good camp kitchen. It's worth getting up early to see the launch of the weather ballon at Giles at 0800 each morning and the conducted our of the weather station is also very informative. A lovely bit of outback Oz around here with lots of feral camels to boot. Enjoy.

Thanks Old Mal, I meant to ask you about the permit thing. Some sites say required, others not necessary. What was your experience? Regards..Oldbaz.
