Just got home from picking some gear up in
Sydney and noticed I used about 5l oil on my 2000km trip. A bit much I think and I will get a compression test done today. My motor has done about 200,000km which is not much but I think it had a hard live before I bought it.
I have no idea who I should talk to regarding rebuild of my engine here in
Brisbane. Thinking about talking to Repco, had some bad experiences with little shops.
Or maybe a jap ebgine importer? any ideas?
cheers
Reiner
PS I was towing my Teardrop Camper but that should not make such a difference.( 400kg)

Morning Reiner.
I don't know what they are quoting for an engine rebuild , but there is a brand new 1HZ long motor sitting on the floor in Lanes Toyota
Melbourne (Spare parts) for somewhere between $6-7,000.00 (Can't remember the exact price but could find out real easy if you are interested)

Reiner,
200,000km is not a lot for a diesel.
I would be doing a few more checks before rebuilding the motor.
Towing the van might have been a blessing. Is there any oil stains on the camper. Check where the exhaust would come out and hit the camper.
Check under the vehicle for oil drops or oil stains on the gear box or diff. This would show a oil leak rather that oil used in the motor.
Change the oil and filter. The motor should take 10lt of oil. After the motor has run for a while allow it to cool before checking the oil level.
If it is still using oil a rebuild might be in order then.

Thanks Wayne, I didn't get around to get a compression test done but I changed oil and filter. I use penrite 20-60 diesel motor oil for many years now. My old HJ47 is still alive with about 3 times the mileage.
I had no oil on the camper at all and I checked today if I get any blow-by when I take the filler cap off, nothing there either.
I will be keeping an eye on the consumption and see what happens.
After I bought my Landcruiser( HZ 75) last year I discovered a lot of red dust in the chassis rails and all sort of
places and it looks like I bought a ex
mine Toyota which had done a lot of work which could explain the excessive wear on the engine.

Unfortunately it may have done way more than 200k.
Its a 10 minute job to change the whole gauge cluster inc odometer in a 70 series.

I think REPCO get GEM to rebuild their engines.
I had one rebuilt in
Perth last year for $4800( not Repco) .I had to remove the engine and strip everything off the outside of the block including the pump, manifolds, every sensor ,nut and bolt.
Then put them all back on and reinstall the engine.
I got a 12 month 20000klm warranty.
It got a compete new engine kit and rebored ect.
I aso had the pump rebuilt ,new radiator.
14 months later all is
well,no oil usage ,no smoke, stays cool and has heaps of power.
I would look in the yellow pages and visit a few shops and talk to them.
Ask them what kind of engine rebuild kits they use, make it clear you want a fully reconditioned engine and that they are a member of the engine reconditioners association.
By being a member they are supposed to abide by the Australian Standards for engine reconditioning.
They are less likely to pull tricks on someone who is aware of their rights and ask the right questions.

Hi Reiner.
I quoted one up for a customer a couple of months ago.
$7200.00 brand new from Toyota.
Not old stock either as they are always bringing them out from Japan. My customer ended up going for a 1HDT conversion on his 100. Best move ever.
For that sort of money I would recommend against a rebuild and go for the new.
For rebuilding I have been using "The Complete Engine Company" formerly API engines. Excellent work and excellent service. Our workshop has been using them for the best part of 20 years for jap imports and I have recently been using them for the rebuilds as GEM/HM have given me nothing but dramas with every job.
Hope this helps

A few years ago I bought a 60 series cruiser with a rebuilt GEM 3F, with under 10,000 k on it. At just over 14,000 the crank shaft broke, right at the front of the engine. It was sent back to
Sydney and rebuilt under waranty [thank christ] but suffered a cracked head about 12 months later. Head cracked along a weld from repair of earlier crack when the head was on some one elses motor :(((

Try CEM oil flushing concentrate before spending up big on a rebuild. CEM is an advertiser on EO. I have used it on our 1HZ with great results especially in keeping the fresh oil clean after an oil change.

Yes the oil consumption is on the high side but if its still putting out reasonable power, why would you spend $4-8000 on a rebuild for the sake of saving 5 liters of oil every 2000km?

Because its probably going to get a whole lot worse real soon and who wants clouds of oil smoke coming out the back?
When I was younger and poorer I would put up with engines not being 100% but now they either get fixed so they perform , or I get rid of them.
Sorry for answering the question for you Reiner.

I agree that is very excessive consumption and indicates a problem. Just at a guess possible a cracked ring

I have to agree with
Ross on that one. I had a 186 Panelvan many moons ago and the blowby was that bad that I had a 4l oilcontainer sitting in the front and every night I put the oil back with some more oldoil to top it up for at least 12 month.
But I think those days are gone.
I changed the oil and filter and see how much oil I use around town without towing the Camper.
Thanks for everybodys replies.
cheers
Reiner
