I’m Back Trip report for Central Queensland

We left home on the 9th of September 06 and returned on the 17th of October 06 we had a Ball.

My Wife, Son and I left Brisbane and had our first night at Mitchall and stayed at the Major Mitchall Caravan Park $13.00 for the first night and the next 2 are free there are hot springs just over the river that are great.

We then went to Barcaldine and stayed the night at the show grounds $10.00 per night and had a look at The Tree of Knowledge, Workers Heritage Centre and a very good little museum with all the old farm Equipment and then a short trip to Longreach.

In Longreach we had a day at the Hall of fame and Qantas Centre which where very good that night we went on a Paddle Boat cruise on the Thompson river and a dinner an the river bank it was a great night and good value for money.

While in Longreach I had the Thermostat in the GU replaced and radiator chemically flushed as the car was get a little hot when towing the van not to hot but hotter than normal.

Winton for a night and the wallzing matilda Centre was good the water in Winton stinks to say the least so if you can fill your tanks before you get there.

Winton to Mount Isa In Mt Isa we stayed a couple of nights at the Sunset Top Tourist Ca raven Park about $20 per night this was a nice park with good facilities and a swimming pool for the kids, while in Mt Isa there is plenty to do and see.

Tanya and Ben went underground in the mine and was an experience to be had to see the terrible conditions and the hard physical work the miners had to do you could not pay me enough to do there job, we did a tour of the open cut mine. These were very good tours that were reasonably priced and informative.

It was in Mt Isa that we realized we were traveling to fast that we needed to cut the itinerary so we could spend three to four nights in most of the towns, which meant we cut off Cooktown, Cairns and any of the Coastal areas.

Mt Isa to Lawn Hill we left Mt Isa to head towards Camoowile and turned right onto the Burke and Wills development road which goes from Camoowile to Burke Town.

You turn off this road to head towards reversleigh station and then onto Lawn Hill and 10km north of that is Adeles Grove where you camp, the road from the burke and wills development road to riversleigh and should only be done by 4 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive vans we received 2 punctures on the way that completely wrecked our tires.

Despite this the natural beauty of Lawn Hill Gorge and Adeles Grove is worth any effort to get there we stayed there for 5 nights. On the way out we went via Gregory river and the Burke and Wills road house this is a much smoother road that would suit any conventional vehicle and van.

Kuramba is a great place if you like fishing we were lucky to be there on a weekend of there annual fishing tournament were my son went on a fishing charter and caught nine blue nosed salmon weighing between 2 and 2.6 kg.

Kuramba to Georgetown where we had 5 days as the viscous fan went in the car and we had to get one from Brisbane There is not a lot to do in Georgetown with out a car but I would like to thank the locals who made us welcome and our stay a good one.

Off to Charters Towers The World what a place to see beautiful buildings and history of our state we would like to go back there and spend more time in the future. While in Charters Towers I had the radiator pulled out and flushed and rodded as it was starting to get hot again.

Emrald for a night and then to Roma for a couple of days we went to the cattle sales and had a good look around Roma.

Millmerran Camp Oven Festival we had a great weekend and enjoyed the company of the other members that attended the week end, we all lernt plenty about camp oven cooking and hints to make it easier to cook with them. Thanks to Brian Havey who organized the weekend for us Exploroz Members.

Crows Nest for 2 nights in the caravan park $20.00 per night and a meal for $15.00 that is just brilliant and worth the trip just for the meal.

Home for two hours to pick up the motor bikes and my Daughter and head to Woodenbong for 5 nights for some of the best riding you will ever experience and a community that still thinks of others and makes every one welcome.

We are know home and had the best holiday ever and would like to thank all the people that helped us prepare for this trip.

I will also at a later date put up my review on our Traveller Caravan after 8000klm of which 400klm was extreme conditions.

Good to be back on the site

BBB,

Sounds like you had a really good trip and fitted a lot of things into it. Nice report. I bet your son just loved that fishing charter!!

Having lived in Winton district for a number of years, the Winton water only stinks when you heat it up.

No, but in parts of Longreach, the tap had to be left running for a while to get cold.

Hot water system not necessary in that part of town.

Only been into Charleville once, usually used the bypass, even when it was dirt....Ahh, memories of a bygone era...

Found a few places like Winton & Mitchell and others that has 'smelly' water when first out of the tap due to H2S. Always found that letting the water sit for a few hours got rid of most of the smell.

Yes

Less has been involved in the last 2 Woodenbong rides and has done a lot of work raising lots of money for the SIDS foundation with what are known as SIDS rides he has just completed a ride to Cape York that was a great sucsess.

Both Less and Ray work very hard to make thies events a sucsess.

Les is a mate of mine, and I've been known to do the odd favour for him and the Foundation. He rang me yesterday with a question which is why your report rang a bell :)))

Hi BBB
I'll be interested in your review of your Traveller. I've just bought an 18' Traveller full van with H/d independant axles, not tandem, 6" draw bar. 16" Landcruiser wheels. Mike...renovice
