When towing a caravan from
Port Augusta to
Mildura which route would you recommend?
We will be travelling just to get from A to B and I'm wondering if short cutting from
Port Pirie to
Burra is an option. Having not been there before, sometimes it's a bit difficult to tell from a map if the roads are suitable for caravanning.
If this route is O.K can anyone recommend a free/ low cost spot between
Burra and
Renmark? (please don't tell me to buy Camps Australia Wide...I'm after a recommendation)
Also after a tip on a caravan
park in
Port Augusta...family friendly!!
Thanks.

Harry, the road from Pirie through
Spalding,
Burra,
Morgan and
Renmark is bitumen all the way.
The
Morgan Caravan
park is fine for an overnighter or longer.
There are a couple of roadside stops between
Morgan and
Renmark that you can stay overnight but no facilities. The most direct route is not going through Waikerie but you will see
Monash on a map. Head through there. The
Monash Store makes the best Steak sandwiches though and the playground adjacent is a must stop for the kids if you have time.

I agree with Des (how unusual is THAT!!!!! hahaha).
However, for a nice
camp spot I reckon you cannot go past the
Burra Creek Gorge stop-over. There are long drop dunnies, but no other facilities. It is about 15 klicks along the
Morgan road from
Burra and then about 10 klicks to
the gorge....bitumen all the way.

Now now now Roachie, better be careful what your agreeing with here.
Harry, what Roachie refers to is that he recons Toyotas are far superior to Nissans. LOL Have a good one Bill

If it's any help I'll 2nd the above, the road is good, we found the traffic light during the Xmas hols, couple of small hills that we dropped back to 2nd crossing the Sth Flinders range. Also the
Monash playground is fantastic, and I'm not easily impressed!
Also there was a fruit stall/
shop on the P.Aug -> Adel Hwy. The produce was great and cheap. Don't get too much as fruit fly stops are on the way but we'll definately stop again next time.
We stopped out of
Mildura so no help there.
Have a good trip,
Slammin.

The route given to you by Des Lexic is the one I normally use.
An alternative is to go to
Peterborough through
Wilmington and then to
Burra,
Morgan, Waikeirie and continue on the Sturt Hwy to
Mildura.
This route is a few kms longer but is actually quicker.

Fully agree.
It surprising how much quicker it is that way even though it's a couple of k's further.
We found the quickest way is
Peterborough through
Wilmington and then to
Burra,
Morgan,
Monash (stay on the road on the northern side of the river between
Morgan and
Monash),
Renmark and onto
Mildura.
I can't help with the stopover thing as we always drove Roxby to
Mildura in 1 hit.
Cheers
Stephen J.

Stephen - I noticed you had
Mutawintji photos on your rig pics.
Was the trip there worth it?
Looks like it would be great in the rain.
Thanks
Andrew.

Guys --- the only problem I see with the
Wilmington suggestion is Harry hasn't said how big a van he is towing and its a bit of a grind up through the
Wilmington way, A good way with a Van is to come down to Crystal Brooke and then shoot across to
Burra going through
Spalding.
